Descripción: A Singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis was performed jointly on the daily intensity of extreme rainfall (DIER) over Argentina and the sea surface temperature (SST) of all the oceans from 17.5°N to 90°S in order to identify the large-scale variability of the SSTs related to extreme rainfall, in the period 1962-2005. The main objective of the article is to objectively recognize regions of the tropical and subtropical oceans that could be related with the extreme rainfall over Argentina. Spring is the season that is best represented by the first mode, accounting for up to 45% of the covariance between the DIER and SST. The first SVD mode of spring, summer and autumn presents a pattern of SST relating to the El Niño-Southern Oscillations (ENSO) phenomena with an enhanced DIER in different zones of centre and east of Argentina. In the second SVD mode of spring and summer, the SST patterns show cold conditions in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic and near Indonesia with an enhancement of the DIER in the centre and east of Argentina. These modes show a significant decadal variability. In the third SVD mode of spring and summer, the SST patterns present warm and cold conditions in the Indian Ocean and the centre and western Pacific Ocean (PO) with decreased rainfall in the northern and eastern portion of Argentina, respectively. This mode shows a significant period of temporal variability of around 14 years. The third mode of autumn presents warm conditions in the tropical Atlantic and the southwest PO with a low DIER in the centre and east of Argentina. This mode also presents temporal variability of around 14 years. The correlation between each mode derived from analysis of SVD and climate indices related with SST were computed. © 2012 Royal Meteorological Society.

Descripción: A Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) analysis was performed jointly on extreme temperature events in Argentina and sea surface temperature (SST) in the South Atlantic and South Pacific. Sea level pressure (SLP) patterns associated with the first SVD coupled mode were also analyzed. Winter is the season of the year that is best represented by the first mode, accounting for up to 70% of the winter covariance between temperature events and SST. The warm and cold events in Argentina are essentially a consequence of the creation of meridional atmospheric circulations over the continent. Such atmospheric patterns result from displacements and intensity changes of the subtropical anticyclones over the oceans and of the continental low-pressure center in northwestern Argentina. The temperature events in southern Argentina are also closely related to the warming and cooling of the coastal waters in the South Atlantic and South Pacific. The analysis suggests that in summer and winter, high (low) occurrence of warm events and low (high) occurrence of cold events are related to similar oceanic and atmospheric circulation situations. The temperature events in Argentina show higher correlation with the Atlantic than with the Pacific, which reflects the importance of the "orographic barrier" of the Andes Mountains in driving the atmospheric circulation. The only exception to this rule concerns the warm events in spring, for which the warming of the equatorial Pacific (the ENSO pattern) appears as the dominant mode. The temporal patterns of the temperature events in Argentina exhibit significant interannual variability in fall, winter, and spring, with periods of 3 to 5 years. Descripción: The present study describes a new species, Ligophorus uruguayense, parasitizing the gills of Mugil platanus Günther, 1880 from the coast of Uruguay. It differs from all other species of the genus mainly in the shape of the ventral bar, the thick process at the distal end of the inner root of ventral anchors, the J-shaped penis accessory piece and the vaginal tube showing transverse annulations at its distal end, the host species, and geographical distribution. Descripción: Little attention has been paid to small copepods and other zooplankton inhabiting pelagic ecosystems of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean under the influence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current circulation, despite their important role in the trophic chain and fisheries. This study gives a synoptic view (January 2001) of the micro and mesoplankton size fractions and normalized biomass size spectra (NBSS) in upper waters of five different ecological domains (shelf and oceanic Subantarctic and Antarctic waters) including the Brazil-Malvinas confluence (BMC). Copepods were always the main component of the zooplankton; the <300-μm fraction represented between 70 and 99% in terms of numbers and from 20 to 88% in terms of biomass. Other zooplankton contributed with <40% to total zooplankton densities, though showing some biomass peaks (>50%). Chlorophyll a, sea surface temperature and salinity were the environmental variables that best explained the distribution trend of zooplankton, mainly that of the <300-μm fraction. For all the domains, NBSS revealed flat slopes (-0.6 to-1), suggesting a higher proportion of large organisms than expected at equilibrium. A dome-shape feature was detected in the BMC. Total biomass and trophic levels of the system were related to the composition of the community and the hydrological conditions of the domains covered. © 2013 The Author.

Descripción: Coupling experiments at small spatial scales with large-scale surveys can help to generalize experimental results across large spatial scales. The goal of the present study was to evaluate patterns of crab herbivory within and, at a larger scale, between many southwestern (SW) Atlantic salt marshes. Hence, we conducted experiments in an Argentinean salt marsh to elucidate the effects of crab Chasmagnathus granulatus grazing on the cordgrass Spartina densiflora and the factors that can affect this interaction, and then examined the potential generality of these results across SW Atlantic salt marshes from Brazil to Argentina (15 marshes, range ≈ 2000 km). Experimental examination of the effects of crabs (control and exclusion) on marsh grass transplants, and factors that can affect them, i.e. the presence or absence of plant neighbors and marsh height (middle and low), revealed that crab herbivory decreased plant biomass and increased stem mortality; however, herbivory effects were significantly diminished in the presence of plant neighbors and with increasing marsh elevation. Our geographical survey showed that crab herbivory is common in SW Atlantic salt marshes, with more than 20 % of leaves damaged in most marshes and with greater consumption at marshes with higher crab densities. In addition, plants at the lower edge of marshes were generally the most consumed (max. >60 % leaves consumed) and crabs preferred S. alterniflora over S. densiflora. Over a regional spatial scale, our results suggest that herbivory may affect plant production at some marshes and can also play a role in limiting the lower tidal elevation limit of low-marsh plants. © Inter-Research 2007.

Descripción: The objective of this research is to study the main variability modes of the frequency of extreme temperatures in the south of South Amenica, their relation to sea surface temperatures (SSTs), and some indices of atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere. Observational data and reanalysis data were used for this purpose over the 1964-2003 period. An initial analysis showed that between the months of March and June, the frequency of wann events (especially warm nights) is highly associated with the SST in coastal zones. A wavelet analysis showed that the main variability mode found at a seasonal scale was an 8-year wave signal present in spning that remains active until the 1990s; it was noticeable in the analysis of cold nights, Atlantic SSTs, Pacific SSTs, and the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). A cross-wavelet analysis among them reflected this signal as a common variability mode, with the positive phase of the SAM congruent with the warmest conditions in the coastal zones of the Atlantic Ocean and lower cases with cold nights at the reference meteorological stations analyzed. Although longer series are desirable for low-frequency variability analysis, the results agree with previous studies that take into account an 8-year periodicity of the baroclinic waves at the Southern Hemisphere, supporting the relevance of the 8-year signal. Descripción: The influence of the plankton community structure on carbon dynamics was studied in the surface waters of the Argentinean continental shelf (SW Atlantic Ocean) in summer and fall 2002, 2003 and 2004, The horizontal changes in plankton community respiration (R), net community production (NCP) and gross primary production (GPP) were (1) compared with the difference in the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) between the sea surface and the atmosphere (ΔpCO2), (2) compared with oxygen saturation and (3) related to the microscopic phytoplankton assemblages, This area, which has recently been shown to be a CO2 sink, had an average surface oxygen saturation of 108.1%, indicating that net photosynthesis could have played a dominant role in the CO2 dynamics. At most stations, the production:respiration (GPP:R) ratio was greater than 1, indicating that planktonic communities were autotrophic; the average GPP:R ratio for the whole study was 2.99, Phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) and NCP showed an inverse relationship with ΔpCO2 and a direct relationship with %O 2 saturation when phytoplankton assemblages were dominated by diatoms (30% of the stations), This was not the case when small (≤5 μm) flagellates were the most abundant organisms, Although NCP was mostly positive for both groups of stations (i.e. diatom-dominated or small flagellate- dominated), other physical and biological processes are thought to modify the CO2 dynamics when small flagellates are the prevailing phytoplankton group. © Inter-Research 2007.

Descripción: Eighteen year (1985-2002) sea surface temperature (SST) data are used to study the intraseasonal variability of the Patagonian shelf break front (SBF) in the SW South Atlantic Ocean between 39° and 44°S. The cross-shelf break SST gradients reveal distinct, previously undocumented thermal fronts located both, offshore and inshore of the SBF. Throughout the year the main SBF, identified as a band of negative SST gradient maxima (relatively strong offshore temperature decrease), forms a persistent feature located closed to the 200 m isobath, while two distinct negative gradient maxima are located inshore and offshore of this location. Daily SST images reveal the presence of three branches of cold waters whose edges delineate the above mentioned fronts. The two offshore branches closely follow lines of constant potential vorticity (f/h) and appear to be associated with the Malvinas Current, while a third branch, located further onshore, is not steered by the bottom topography. South of 40°S the onshore branch forms a quasi permanent front parallel to the SBF. Copyright 2008 by the American Geophysical Union.

Descripción: The oceanic circulation over the southwestern Atlantic shelf is influenced by large tidal amplitudes, substantial freshwater discharges, high wind speeds and - most importantly - by its proximity to two of the largest western boundary currents of the world ocean: the Brazil and Malvinas currents. This review article aims to discriminate the dynamical processes controlling the interaction between this extensive shelf region and the deep-ocean. The discussion is focused on two broad regions: the South Brazil Bight to the north, and Patagonia to the south. The exchanges between the Brazil Current and the South Brazil Bight are characterized by the intermittent development of eddies and meanders of the Brazil Current at the shelfbreak. However, it is argued that this is not the only - nor the most important - influence of the Brazil Current on the shelf. Numerical simulations show that the thermohaline structure of the South Brazil Bight can be entirely ascribed to steady state, bottom boundary layer interactions between the shelf and the Brazil Current. The Malvinas Current does not show the development of eddies and meanders, but its influence on the Patagonian shelf is not less important. Models and observations indicate that the Malvinas Current not only controls the shelfbreak dynamics and cross-shelf exchanges but also influences the circulation in the shelf's interior. © Author(s) 2010.

Descripción: Spectral analyses performed on records of cosmogenic nuclides reveal a group of dominant spectral components during the Holocene period. Only a few of them are related to known solar cycles, i.e., the De Vries/Suess, Gleissberg and Hallstatt cycles. The origin of the others remains uncertain. On the other hand, time series of North Atlantic atmospheric/sea surface temperatures during the last ice age display the existence of repeated large-scale warming events, called Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events, spaced around multiples of 1470 years. The De Vries/Suess and Gleissberg cycles with periods close to 1470/7 (∼210) and 1470/17 (∼86.5) years have been proposed to explain these observations. In this work we found that a conceptual bistable model forced with the De Vries/Suess and Gleissberg cycles plus noise displays a group of dominant frequencies similar to those obtained in the Fourier spectra from paleo-climate during the Holocene. Moreover, we show that simply changing the noise amplitude in the model we obtain similar power spectra to those corresponding to GISP2 δ18O (Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2) during the last ice age. These results give a general dynamical framework which allows us to interpret the main characteristic of paleoclimate records from the last 100 000 years. © 2010 Author(s).

Descripción: This is the first study on diatom spatial patterns in relation to major oceanographic features along a megascale transect in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean and provides a comparison with diatom distribution in surface sediments. Absolute abundances of diatoms, silicoflagellates and dinoflagellates (>10-μm fraction) were assessed in 80 bottle samples from 5 to 50 m, retrieved in November 1993 at 20 stations (30-61°S) along 53°W. Siliceous phytoplankton were scarce in the northern half of the transect and in the south of 57°S (100-150 cells L-1), with a strong peak in the vicinity of the Polar Front (∼200 000 cells L-1), whereas dinoflagellates were more abundant at the northern stations (up to 24 000 cells L-1). In the south of 50°S phytoplanktonic cell densities were loosely (but significantly, r = 0.54, P < 0.01) associated with chlorophyll a, whereas in the north of this latitude, this relationship disappeared (r = 0.018, P > 0.1). In total, 191 diatoms and 4 silicoflagellates were recorded. Changes in diatom assemblage compositions along the transect allowed identification of five discrete areas: Subtropical (29°S), Northern Transitional (34-41°S), Southern Transitional (43-48°S), Subantarctic (49-54°S) and Antarctic (55-59°S), each characterized by a set of typical species. Diversity changed little with latitude, but numbers of species were higher in the north of 40°S. Comparison of diatom assemblage makeup in the plankton and in the surface sediments shows very strong disagreements, whereby cold water species are very significantly over-represented in the sedimentary record, suggesting enhanced preservation and strong subsurface equatorward advection of the cold water taxa. © The Author 2006. Descripción: The thermohaline structure across the tidal fronts of the continental shelf off Patagonia is analyzed using historical and recent summer hydrographic sections. The near-summer tidal front location is determined on the basis of the magnitude of vertical stratification of the water column as measured by the Simpson parameter. Sea surface and air CO2 partial pressures based on data from eleven transects collected in summer and fall from 2000 to 2004 are used to estimate CO2 fluxes over the shelf. The near-shore waters are a source of CO2 to the atmosphere while the midshelf region is a CO2 sink. The transition between source and sink regions closely follows the location of tidal fronts, suggesting a link between vertical stratification of the water column and the regional CO2 balance. The highest surface values of Chl a are associated with the strongest CO2 sinks. The colocation of lowest CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) and highest Chl a suggests that phytoplankton blooms on the stratified side of the fronts draw the ocean's CO2 to very low levels. The mean shelf sea-air difference in pCO2 (ΔpCO2) is -24 μatm and rises to -29 μatm if the shelf break front is included. Peaks in ΔpCO2 of -110 μatm, among the highest observed in the global ocean, are observed. The estimated summer mean CO2 flux over the shelf is -4.4 mmol m-2 d-1 and rises to -5.7 mmol m-2 d-1 when the shelf break area is taken into account. Thus, during the warm season the shelf off Patagonia is a significant atmospheric CO2 sink. Copyright 2005 by the American Geophysical Union.

Descripción: This study documents differences in the courtship behavior of wild strains of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) from Madeira (Portugal), Hawaii (U.S.A.), Costa Rica, and Patagonia (Argentina). Some traits showed large variations and others substantial overlaps. The angle at which the male faced toward the female at the moment of transition from continuous wing vibration and intermittent buzzing changed very little during the course of courtship in all strains, but males from Madeira tended to face more directly toward the female than other males. Females tended to look more, and more directly, toward the males as courtship progressed in all strains. The distance between male and female tended to decrease as courtship proceeded in all strains, but the distances at which males initiated continuous vibration, intermittent buzzing, and jumped onto the female were relatively less variable between strains, except for the strain from Costa Rica. Flies of Madeira courted for longer and the male moved his head and buzzed his wings longer than the other strains.

Descripción: The paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic significance of Cretaceous flora in the Neuquén Basin is summarized. Berriasian-Barremian terrestrial palynological assemblages are dominated by Araucariaceae and Cheirolepidiaceae, with subordinated podopcarps, ferns, lycopsids and bryophytes that progressed in a mild and humid climate. Tithonian-Barremian dinoflagellates mostly possess Mediterranean affinities. Upper Barremian evaporitic strata represent the final cycle of marine deposition related to the Pacific ocean in the basin. In the Aptian appear the first angiosperm pollen grains. Aptian-Cenomanian terrestrial palynological assemblages are characterized by the presence of northern Gondwana forms such as Afropollis and elaterate pollen grains. Tempskyaceae and Ginkgoales are also present in the late Early Cretaceous. Turonian-lower Campanian continental strata mostly include petrified wood and charophytes. Upper Campanian-Maastrichtian strata yield a rich terrestrial palynological assemblage composed by Nothofagaceae, Podocarpaceae, Cheirolepidiaceae, Araucariaceae, Salviniales and angiosperms, but also dinoflagellates that reflect the beginning of a marine transgression related to the Atlantic ocean. The presence of locally abundant cycads and palms suggests a warm and relatively humid climate towards the end of the Cretaceous.
