Descripción: Sedimentology and paleoenvironments of the Patagoniano and its transition to the Santa Cruz Formation south of Lago Argentino, southern Patagonia. Detailed sedimentological analysis of the Patagoniano and its transition to the Santa Cruz Formation has been carried out south of Lago Argentino, in southern Patagonia. The 180 meters thick succession of fossiliferous sandstones was subdivided into twelve lithofacies, grouped in three facies associations. From base to top we defined the facies association I, dominated by massive, bioturbated and fossiliferous sandstones; the facies association II, dominated by fining upward cycles of cross-stratified sandstones and heterolithic facies; and the facies association III dominated by thin conglomeratic levels interbedded with mudstones rich in plant remains and paleosoils. The facies association I is interpreted as the deposit of a transgressive, shallow sea with oyster rich biogenic accumulations, finally evolving to a coastal plain paleoenvironment. A new transgression originated the discontinuity underlying the facies association II, which was interpreted as a progradational estuarine system. Finally, the ongoing progradation produced the fluvial meandering system of facies association III, assigned to the Santa Cruz Formation. The new name "Estancia 25 de Mayo" is formalized here for the Patagoniano in the southernmost Cordillera Patagónica, instead of the problematic name Centinela Formation. The Estancia 25 de Mayo Formation was subdivided in two members: the lower Quién Sabe Member, equivalent to the facies association I, and the upper Bandurrias Member, equivalent to the (facies association II).

Descripción: In this paper new geologic evidences allow us to complete the stratigraphy of Ramez de Velasco ranges. Granitoids of the igneous basement are included into the Ojo de Agua-Ambargasta complex as the Sumampa Granite which is composed of three facies: facies Para Yacu, Sumampa Viejo and Los Telares. Thin aplitic dykes were included into the same basement as the last magmatic event of the same geological setting. The geochemical signature of these rocks shows meta to peraluminous compositions, which evidence magmatic arc granitoides. Basic dykes, few meters wide and more than one kilometer long, also intrude these granitoids. They are composed of basalts and andesites with calcoalkaline signatures that were correlated with Balbuena formation due to their petrological features. Finally, few and small outcrops of sandstones appears as the only expression of the Neopaleozoic sedimentation. On the basis of all the data obtained we suggest that the Ramíez de Velasco ranges preserve evidences of several geologic processes that took place since the Paleozoic.

Descripción: This paper describes for the first time in the study area the lithology, structure and different metamorphic events that have affected the basement in the eastern margin of Brazo Huemul of Nahuel Huapi Lake. These rocks have been classified as protomilonitic paragneisses and they were correlated to the Colohuincul Complex. A brittle - ductile shear zone with an orientation of N14°W (similar to the regional trend) has been interpreted as a deep angle reverse fault (74°SW), that put metamorphic basement rocks in tectonic contact with volcanic/ volcaniclastic rocks from Ventana Formation. In agreement with the mineral assemblages observed (quartz - chlorite - biotite - garnet (almandine) - albite) it was possible to determine a sedimentary pelitic protolith that was affected by regional metamorphism under high temperature green schist facies (biotite - garnet zone) conditions. © 2006 Asociación Geológica Argentina.

Descripción: The study of the carbonate-ramp deposits of La Manga Formation has allowed us to recognize three facies associations. The lithofacies association A is composed by five lithofacies (A1-A5). This association represents part of the transgressive systems tract. It corresponds to external ramp deposits, accumulated below the storm-wave base. The A facies association appears in cycles of centimetric to decimetric thickness and belong to a retrograding parasequence set of 5th order. The lithofacies B association starts after an abrupt facies contact. It is characterized by six lithofacies (B1-B6). They are coarsening upward beds that form metric-scale cycles. These are interpreted as middle-ramp deposits dominated by storms. It corresponds to 4th order sequences. The lithofacies C includes three lithofacies (C1-C3). The small scale cycles were controlled by storm events, while the medium and large scale ones were likely originated by eustasy. The studied stratigraphic sections of La Manga Formation are included in two depostitional sequences SD-2 and SD-3. An abrupt discontinuity marks the beginning of the depositional sequence SD-2, which constitutes a transgressive system-tract, composed by a coarsening upward parasequence stacking set. Above a maximum flooding surface, manifested by a drastic change of facies, a low rate accommodation space period and a sea-level fall (characterized by a lowstand systems tract) are evidenced. The third depositional sequence SD-3 is composed by lagoon deposits. It starts after a paleokarstic surface, characterized by the development of a sheet-cake breccia and an intense vadose diagenesis.

Descripción: The study of mineral assemblages and metamorphic facies in rocks exposed on the eastern margin of Brazo Huemul, Nahuel Huapi Lake, allowed the reconsideration of the temporal succession of units whose outcrops are isolated and difficult to locate due to the exuberant forest that covers the southestern part of Neuquén province. The rocks exposed in the study area are mainly of tonalitic composition and have been correlated with the Subcordilleran Patagonian Batholith because they are crosscut by two different types of dikes. One group of dikes shows an albite -chlorite - epidote - cummingtonite/grunerite -hornblende mineral assemblage as a consequence of a thermal metamorphic event transitional between albite - epidote hornfels facies and hornblende hornfels conditions. This process has been attributed to the emplacement of the Cordilleran Patagonian Batholith of Cretaceous age. Because of this, the hornfels dikes were correlated with Montes de Oca Formation. The other group of dikes shows a chlorite + pumpellyite + kumontite + chlorite/esmectite + iron oxides assemblage indicating metamorphism in zeolite facies of high temperature or, sometimes shows propilitic alteration and these dikes have been correlated with the Ventana Formation. The differences between these two types of dikes allow the discussion of the relative age of the tonalitic rocks that host them. In this paper it is proposed that this tonalitic body is of Low to Middle Jurassic age. © 2006 Asociación Geológica Argentina.

Descripción: The lower section of Canadon Asfalto Formation (Callovian-Oxfordian) is located at Las Chacritas, Cerro Condor area, on the middle course of Chubut River. It is represented by lacustrine carbonate faciès with interbedded volcanic layers accumulated in the rift system of the Somuncura-Canadon Asfalto Basin. Eight microfacies (MF), defining the lake environments, and three biohermal faciès (MFB) corresponding to an extensive microbialitic belt overlying eulittoral sediments have been recognized: The microfacies are: MF1, mudstone with microbial lamination, related to supralittoral shallow ponds; MF2, biohermal intraclastic floatstone linked to storm episodes; culminating with evaporitic levels; MF3, mudstone with evidence of dessication formed in stagnant water; MF4, microbial-peloidal mudstone/wackestone with evidence of sporadic wave currents, in a eulittoral environment; MF5, intraclastic grainstone/rudstone with pedogenic alterations showing evidence of wave action in a eulittoral area; MF6, oncoidal floatstone interpreted as an hiperconcentrated flow; MF7: Bio-intra-siliciclastic packstone/wackestone accumulated in infralittoral conditions and MF8, silicified bulbous stromatolites related to the outlet of fluvial channels. The biohermal faciès are: MFB9, mudstone with stromatolites and wackestone levels; MFB10, planar stromatolites and MFB11, hemispherical stromatolites with chalk crust. Behind the biohermal belt, palustrine limestones locally show layers with episodic storm floods. The microfacial and facial distribution represents expansion and contraction cycles of a closed lake, controlled mainly by the precipitations. ©1999 Asociacián Gcológica Argentina.

Descripción: Magmatism related to the growth and migration of the Andean arc was developed from the 36°40'S to the 38°20'S latitude, in the northwestern sector of the Neuquén Province, by the end of the Mesozoic. Hypabyssal and extrusive facies, which outcrop in the Pichaihue area, were described based on petrologic studies. The first ones are composed of andesites that are emplaced as lacoliths, dikes or sills intruding the Mesozoic sedimentary sequences. In addition, basalts outcrops were recognized. The extrusive facies consist of breccia or massive lavas and little domes. The geochemistry reveals an arc-like calc-alkaline signature with a normal crust and trace-element patterns which suggest a similar source. Based on regional knowledge, three groups are proposed: Cerro Mocho dikes with Ti anomalies and higher Sm/Yb; extrusive facies of the Upper Cretaceous- Paleocene (Rivera Andesite); and the hypabyssal facies of thr Eocene (Colipilli Dikes). Finally, the occurrences of these rocks in this segment of the Andes indicate an important shift to the East of the Upper Cretaceous-Eocene volcanic arc that reveals its easternmost position.

Descripción: La Flecha Formation (Upper Cambrian) in Precordillera Central is composed of microbiolitic buildups, with a shallowing upward tendency. This paper includes the study of mega, meso and microstructure of thrombolites and stromatolites and the microfacial analysis of the muddy sequence. The following microbiolitic facies were recognized: F1: stratiform and domal stroms, with low synoptic relief, F2: stratiform thrombolites, F3: stratiform-domal thrombolites with low synoptic relief, F4: inverted cone-shaped thrombolites and F5: domal thrombolites. The associated muddy microfacies are represented by: MF6: mudstone with microbial lamination and fenestral fabric, MF7: mudstone with grumous microestructure, MF8: bioturbed mudstone and MF9: floatstone, related to storms. The depositional model of this sequence was interpreted as a carbonatic platform with a complex of non-emergent microbialitic mounds and ponds with restricted circulation.

Descripción: The Cerro Cóndor depocenter represents the most complete stratigraphic sequence of the continental Jurassic of the Cañadón Asfalto basin and southern South America. It is situated in extraandean Patagonia, on both sides of the middle Chubut river valley. The sedimentation in this pull-apart basin begins early in the Middle Jurassic, accompanied by effusions of olivinic basalts. The prevailing lacustrine deposits are characterized by carbonatic and siliciclastic facies associations, interfingering with volcanic deposits grading from lavic in the base to predominantly pyroclastic towards the top. The facies evolution from north to south is described, embracing the sections of farm El Torito and the canyons of Los Loros, Las Chacritas, Carrizal, Asfalto and Lahuincó. The carbonatic facies/microfacies are represented by mudstones, wackestones, packstones, grainstones and microbialitic limestones, characteristic of littoral/marginal and palustrine environments. In the Cañadón Asfalto Formation are distinguished a lower member (Las Chacritas composed by limestones, shales, sandstones and conglomerates intercalated with olivinic basalts, and an upper member (Puesto Almada) composed by tuffs, tuffites, shales and sandstones. The first is bearing a palynologic assemblage of Bajocian-Bathonian age and the second dinosaurs of Tithonian age. The stratigraphic sections of both members of the formation are described and illustrated at their type localities cañadón Las Chacritas and farm El Torito and the paleoenvironments of the depocenter, from the Aalenian to the Tithonian are described and illustrated. The age of the Puesto Almada Member at its type locality was obtained by radiometric dating (K/Ar) of biotites from a thin layer of volcanic tuff (147.1 + 3.3 Ma, Tithonian) from the upper part of the unit.

Descripción: The region is situated in the Neuquén Cordillera at 38° 30'S latitud close to the international border. Geomorphic and structural features are presented which indicated a glacial morphogenesis for the depression that contains the Moquehue- Aluminé lakes. Previous works have identified a large volcanic complex related to Plio-Quaternary volcanic activity located at the east of the present volcanic arc. In this sector various caldera depressions and associated domic bodies have been identified. From the nine proposed calderas only the Pino Hachado caldera has been studied in detail. The Meseta del Arco and Nacimientos del Aluminé are disregarded as calderas. The erosional genesis of the steep scarps previously interpreted as caldera margins is also identified with glacial erosion. Facies and types of the local Pleistocene glaciation, its extension, their flow direction and its quite probable diffluence (Paso del Arco) through coeval glaciers situated north of the international border are also analyzed. Local characteristics of volcanic and eolian morphogenic and the mass-wasting process are described. Brief comments about pre-glacial drainage and the previous proposal of Bío Bío-Aluminé trough on the region are added. Transversal topographic-geological profiles discard west of the Bío Bío-Aluminé Fault a structural unit related to tectonic depression of Bío Bío-Aluminé trough and the Nacimientos del Aluminé and Moquehue calderas.

Descripción: Quartzitic sandstones of the sierras Bayas Group in Sierras Septentrionales of Buenos Aires are studied. Outcrops of these deformed rocks are observed at sierras Bayas and Barker localities, where quartzitic sandstones from Precambrian units are present. These rocks are compared with similar fault breccias in Sierras Australes of Buenos Aires, which were develop in quartzitic rocks of several Paleozoic units of this region. At both regions, fault zones are subvertical layers with acute contacts on the wall rocks. An original sedimentary protolith is recognized in textures and structures preserved in all samples of Sierras Bayas. Sedimentary textures at Sierras Australes are obliterated by penetrative deformation in greenschists facies methamorphism and also show a metaquartzitic protolith. In both analyzed regions, similar cataclastic textures are observed. All these breccias and microbreccias would be associated with a major extensional tectonic event of Jurassic - Cretaceous age, which could be related to the origin of Colorado and Salado extensional basins during the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean.

Descripción: A major and trace element based characterization of the metasedimentary protoliths of three metamorphic units of Sierra de San Luis (Pringles Metamorphic Complex, San Luis Formation and Conlara Metamorphic Complex) is presented. Geochemistry indicates a dominance of shales in the protoliths of San Luis Formation, whereas greywackes and shales made up the Conlara Metamorphic complex and mainly greywackes, the Pringles Metamorphic Complex. Both major element data and trace element ratios (i.e. Th/Sc, Th/U,) indicate a source with an average upper crustal composition for the protoliths of the Pringles Metamorphic Complex, the San Luis Formation and the shales of the Conlara Metamorphic complex. A component with less evolved signature may be inferred for the metagreywackes of the Conlara metamorphic Complex. Mixed sourced detritus are indicated for the three units with clastic material resulting mainly from both andesitic and acidic/recycled detritus. The overall data consistently suggest a continental island arc and/or active margin setting as the more probable geodynamic scenario for the deposition of the sedimentary precursors of the studied units. In this context, a back-arc setting can account for the mixed nature of the inferred source areas with uplifted old basement and arc-related detritus as the end members of the mixtures. The inferred back-arc basin would have evolved through the Cambrian receiving the sediments derived from the Pampean Orogen to the east combined with probably some old crust exposures and to the west the source might have been controlled by the active continental margin. © 2003 Asociación Geológica Argentina.

Descripción: Late Cretaceous and Paleogene sedimentary rocks of the Austral Basin crop out on the south-eastern margin of Lake Viedma. In the Barrancas Blancas section, 28 m of yellowish sandstone and mudstone of the La Asunción Member of the Anita Formation are transitionally covered by 390 m of greyish sandstone and mudstone of the Cerro Fortaleza Formation. The former represent a prograding barred nearshore system, whereas the latter correspond to paralic, fluvial and fluvial-tidal sedimentation. The evolution of the depositional sequences, sedimentary palaeoenvironments, sandstone provenance and palaeocurrents indicate that the sediments were deposited during the back-arc (sag) stage of the basin. At Cerro Piramides, Tertiary sedimentary rocks rest with fault contact on top of the Cerro Fortaleza Formation. The limited thickness (<1m) preserved of greenish sandstone of the Man Aike Formation precludes any attempt to interpret its depositional environment. Conglomerate, sandstone and mudstone (locally carbonaceous) of the Río Leona Formation (75 m) rest with erosional contact on the former. These rocks represent a rapid transition from a high energy to low energy fluvial systems that eventually graded into marginal marine environments represented by the fossiliferous sandstones of the Centinela Formation (<3m). The facies arrangement, evolution of the palaeoenvironments, and palaeocurrents suggest that these sediments were deposited during the foreland basin stage. © 2003 Asociación Geológica Argentina.

Descripción: The Cordillera de los Andes is the typical example of a subduction-related orogen. Its present topography is the result of post-Miocene uplift, however, Andean compressional deformation and uplift started in the Late Cretaceous, as increasingly recognized in different sectors of the mountain belt. We present evidences of a Late Cretaceous event of compressional deformation in the southern Central Andes (35oS), reflected in syn-orogenic foreland basin deposits assigned to the Neuquén Group in Argentina and the Brownish-Red Clastic Unit in Chile. Comparison of the facies of these units allows us to recognize a sector proximal to the Late Cretaceous orogenic front, a distal sector with sediment provenance from the forebulge and a western sector where the sediments where deposited within the Late Cretaceous mountain belt. On this basis, we assign the orogenic front to an inverted Jurassic normal fault, the Río del Cobre fault, and reconstruct the structure of the easternmost Late Cretaceous Andes at this latitude. The change in the location of the orogenic front north and south of 35oS allows us to recognize a long-lived change in behavior in Andean evolution in this sector, which correlates with a change in the shape and the deposits of Mesozoic Neuquén basin.

Descripción: A paleomagnetic study, carried out on 9 sites of the La Flecha Formation (facies Los Sapitos, Upper Cambrian, Marjuman-Steptoean) exposed along the la Angostura creek, Precordillera of La Rioja (29.5°S, 68.7°W), permitted to determine two magnetic components. One is postectonic and of low coercivities and unblocking temperatures (A, Dec: 7.5°, Inc: -40.3°, a95: 10.1°, N: 6), being interpreted as a recent remanence of probable viscous origin. A second, pretectonic, component was isolated in seven sites with opposite polarities and is likely carried by magnetite (B, Dec: 206.9°, Inc: 63.3°, a95: 12.8°, N: 7). The paleomagnetic pole position for this component (Lat: 63.8°S, Long: 244.6°E, dp: 15.9°, dm: 20.2°) suggests that the remanence was acquired by the end of the Permian and it is interpreted as produced by the regional remagnetization associated with the San Rafael orogenic phase found in other units of the Precordillera. An analysis of pole positions, type of magnetizations, polarities and geographic distribution of the remagnetized units suggests a pattern of time-space migration of the remagnetization from west to east, between the Early Permian and the Permian-Triassic. This pattern is consistent with a model of remagnetization by migration of fluids expelled from the orogenic area that reached rocks not involved directly in the deformation. The pole position obtained for La Flecha Formation also suggests the lack of major tectonic rotations in the study area since the Permian. © 2005 Asociación Geológica Argentina.

Descripción: This paper reports the presence of Maastrichtian rocks in the north of the Precordillera (La Rioja province). The Cretaceous succesion (122 m thick) is a classical red bed sequence composed of sandstones, mudstones, marls and thin levels of evaporites. According to lithological features 6 facies associations have been recognized that mainly characterize a lacustrine system developed under arid to semiarid conditions. Probably as a result of an increase in aridity, eolian sediments were deposited at the top of the Cretaceous unit. At least two transgressive-regressive events have been recognized in the lacustrine sequence. The best developed is the first event formed by fossiliferous black shales corresponding to the maximum flooding stage. These rocks have yield remains of calcareous microfossils, palynomorphs and gastropods. The former comprise charophytes, with Platychara compressa (Knowlton) an Tectochara sp. A Musacchio, anda ostracods, with Ilyocypris wichmanni punctata Musacchio y Simeoni, Eucandona? sp., Cypridopsis and Ovo cytheridea? rionegrensis Musacchio.. Palinomorphs form a monospecific assemblage of algae colonies corresponding to Pediastrum. The lithological features, stratigraphic location and fossiliferous remains clearly suggest a regional correlation with the Ciénaga del Rio Huaco Formation. This correlation considerably enlarge the regional distribution of the Cretaceous sediments which were previously limited to the Precordillera of San Juan province. © 2005 Asociación Geológica Argentina.

Descripción: Bracketed between 188-152 Ma, the Chon Aike Silicic Province developed in Patagonia covering an area of about 1,7 x 10 6 km 2 with volcanic products. An extensional tectonic regime that was active since at least the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary accompanied this volcanic megaevent. Kinematic analyses focused in four selected localities (El Dorado - Monserrat, Norte de Cerro Vanguardia and El Fénix, in the Deseado region; and Lago Ghío, in the southern Patagonian Cordillera) allowed to define the main kinematic axes and to recognize two different kinematic events (a main and a secondary ones). Additionally these data certified the transtensional character of the Jurassic deformational event. When comparing directions of kinematic axes of all the selected localities, two kinematic domains: west and east could be discriminated. Whereas the eastern domain (El Dorado - Monserrat, Cerro Vanguardia north) shows ENE and NNW directions of extension for the main and the secondary kinematic events respectively, the western domain (El Fénix and Lago Ghío) indicate NE and NW directions of extension for the two events. The two kinematic events could be related or correspond to different volcanic facies. Considering the diachronism of the Chon Aike province (younger volcanic rocks westwards), the different kinematic fields could be linked to a large scale, non-coaxial deformation regime that controlled the emplacement of the Chon Aike volcanic province.

Descripción: A sequence of plutonic mafic rocks inter-stratified with both mafic- and metasedimentary-derived migmatites is found along the San Juan valley in the center of the Sierra de Valle Fértil. This natural example shows the transition from igneous to metamorphic petrologic processes which occurred during the crystallization of mafic magmas and the subsequent partial melting of crystallized gabbroic rocks. This work studies the mineralogical changes associate to this petrologic transition. Thermobarometric estimates based on amphibole-plagioclase indicate that the mafic magmas crystallized at around 1100°C and 5 ± 0.5 kbar. The conditions under which gabbroic rocks were partially melted are estimated using two pyroxenes ther-mometry and amphibole-plagioclase thermobarometry. Similar physical conditions in the range between 740 and 840°C and 5 to 6.5 kbar are recovery from mineral assemblages in the mesosomes and leucosomes of mafic migmatites. The main mineral compositional changes that accompanied the partial process of the gabbroic rocks are: 1) depletion of aluminium content and Mg# ratio in pyroxenes; 2) depletion of anorthite mole fraction of the plagioclases; and 3) depletion of the Mg# ratio in amphiboles. These mineral compositional variations are consistent with those found by experimentally melting mafic protoliths. Experimental results showed that the temperature for promoting amphibole-dehydration melting in mafic proto-liths is of around 850°C, whereas the addition of an aqueous fluid would lower the melting temperature to around 800°C. Combining field relationships, textural features, mineral compositional variations and thermo-barometric estimates with experimental results, we demonstrated that the transition from igneous mafic rocks to mafic migmatites was due to isobaric cooling. Moreover, repetitive intrusion of mafic magmas sustained the sequence at granulite-facies conditions, so avoiding rapid cooling. The natural case from the centre of the Sierra de Valle Fértil is interpreted to expose an example of the plutonic-me-tamorphic core of the Famatinian magmatic arc, where the abnormally high metamorphic gradient provide evidence that large volume of mafic magmas reached and emplaced at paleodepths of between 16 and 20 kilometres.

Descripción: Samples obtained from four wells located at Bancalari, Buenos Aires Province, have been analysed in order to define textural parameters, petrofacies, palaeoenvironments and palaeoclimate evolution. The samples were obtained from the upper part of the Puelches Formation and from the Pampean and Postpampean sediments; in particular this paper highlights the informally named Preensenadense interval. Six textural groups (I to VI) and two petrofacies (A and B) have been recognised. Groups I to III represent fluvial sands (I), gradually overlain by backswamp and lake deposits (II -III), generated on very low slope and well-drained floodplains, with oxidizing conditions. Groups II and III are assigned to Preensenadense interval. The three groups are included in petrofacies A (Qt:F:L = 43:49:8), of sedimentary and basement provenance, which has an igneous metamorphic heavy suite, scarce hornblende and dominance of smectite over illite. By contrast the upper groups (IV to VI) show more varied depositional settings, including aeolian, fluvial and marine environments. Group IV is loessic and corresponds to the Ensenada Formation. Group V, the Lujan Formation (Río Salado Member), is composed of fluvial plain deposits deposited during a wet and temperate climate. Marine silts and clays (group VI) represent a transgression over terrestrial environments and record of the so-called Querandino event. The three upper groups are included in petrofacies B (12:56:32), and have a magmatic arc provenance, with plagioclase dominance and contributions of volcaniclastic and vitroclastic material. It contains a heavy-mineral suite mainly composed of hornblende and it has more illite than smectite. © 2005 Asociación Geológica Argentina.
