Descripción: The diffractive efficiency of Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) displays can be greatly diminished by the appearance of temporal phase fluctuations in the reflected beam, depolarization effects and also because of phase modulation depths smaller than 2π. In order to maximize the efficiency of the Diffractive Optical Elements (DOEs) implemented in the LCoS device, the Minimum Euclidean Distance principle can be applied. However, not all the diffractive elements can be corrected in the same way due to the anamorphic and spatial frequency dependent phenomenon, which is related to the LCoS response, largely depending on the period and the spatial orientation of the generated DOE. Experimental evidence for the anamorphic and spatial frequency dependent phenomenon is provided in this paper, as well as a comparative study between the LCoS display response for binary gratings of different periods.

Descripción: In the present work, we studied the efficiency of a magnetic island filter for two vacuum arc designs, pulsed and continuous. The magnetic island filter consisted in a straight duct with an external solenoid and a magnet enclosed in a housing (magnetic island) located inside the duct on its axis, and both magnetic fields are in opposite direction. The housing of the magnetic island obstructs the line of sight between the cathode and the substrate. In this arrangement, the charged plasma components move along the curved magnetic field lines, around the magnetic island, but the macroparticles move in straight paths and deposit on the wall of the magnetic island housing. The performance of the filter was characterized for different external and internal field strengths. The plasma transport efficiency was analyzed by measuring the ion saturation current with Langmuir probes and the deposited mass rate. The ion transmission efficiency around the system axis achieved values around 25%. Observation of the coating surface morphology with optical microscopy determined that the macroparticles were effectively removed.

Descripción: We consider the problem of constructing robust nonparametric confidence intervals and tests of hypothesis for the median when the data distribution is unknown and the data may contain a small fraction of contamination. We propose a modification of the sign test (and its associated confidence interval) which attains the nominal significance level (probability coverage) for any distribution in the contamination neighborhood of a continuous distribution. We also define some measures of robustness and efficiency under contamination for confidence intervals and tests. Descripción: Turbulent flows take place in a large variety of astrophysical objects, and often times are the source of dynamo generated magnetic fields. Much of the progress in our understanding of dynamo mechanisms, has been made within the theoretical framework of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). However, for sufficiently diffuse media, the Hall effect eventually becomes non-negligible. We present results from simulations of the Hall-MHD equations. The simulations are performed with a pseudospectral code to achieve exponentially fast convergence. We study the role of the Hall effect in the dynamo efficiency for different values of the Hall parameter. © 2011 International Astronomical Union.

Descripción: In spite of its massively parallel architecture [1], the human brain is fundamentally limited if required to perform two tasks at the same time [2, 3]. This limitation can be studied with the psychological refractory period (PRP) paradigm, where two stimuli that require speeded responses occur in close succession [4]. Interference generally takes the form of a delay in the time to respond to the second stimulus [5]. Previous studies suggested that sensory decisions require the accumulation of sensory evidence [6, 7] and that the PRP reflects the inability to form more than one decision at a time [4, 8]. In the present study, we used a psychophysical reverse-correlation technique [9, 10] to measure the time-course of evidence accumulation during the PRP. We found that the accumulation of evidence could occur during the PRP albeit with a reduced efficiency, which implies that multiple decision processes can occur in parallel in the human brain. In addition to the reduced efficiency of evidence accumulation, our results uncover an additional delay in the routing of the decision to motor structures during the PRP, which implies that the process of sensory decision making is separable from the preparation of a motor response [11-13]. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Descripción: Aims. We study the stability and modes of non - isothermal coronal loop models with different intensity values of equilibrium twisted magnetic field.Methods. We use an energy principle obtained by means of non - equilibrium thermodynamic arguments. The principle is expressed in terms of Hermitian operators and enables us to consider the coupled system of equations, the balance of energy equation and the equation of motion, to obtain modes and eigenmodes in a spectrum ranging from short to long-wavelength disturbances without using weak varying approximations of the equilibrium parameters. Long-wavelength perturbations introduce additional difficulties because the inhomogeneous nature of the medium produce disturbances corresponding to continuous intervals of eigenfrequencies, which cannot be considered as purely sinusoidal.Results. We analyze the modification of periods, modes structure, and stability when the helicity, the magnetic field strength, and the radius of the fluxtube are varied. The efficiency of the damping due to the resonant absorption mechanism is analyzed in terms of modes that can either impulsively release or store magnetic energy.Conclusions. We find that the onset of the instability is associated with a critical value of the helicity and the magnetic energy content has a determinant role on the instability of the system with respect to the stabilizing effect of the resonant absorption mechanism. © 2008 ESO.

Descripción: Drosophila serido Vilela & Sene is a polytypic and cactophilic species with broad geographic distribution in Brazil. The morphology of the aedeagi of eight natural populations of D. serido was analyzed. Based on features of their aedeagi, populations of D. serido were discriminated with an efficiency of nearly 75%. The analysis using the Mantel test suggests that the morphological divergence of D. serido is correlated with the geographic distance among populations. There is no single cause to explain the observed pattern; therefore, the results were discussed considering the three main hypotheses to explain the aedeagus evolution: lock and key, pleiotropy and sexual selection. Alternatively, the aedeagus variability of D. serido might be related to environmental causes, such as temperature and/or host cacti.

The present work studies the action of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) on the decarboxylation of uroporphyrinogen (Urogen) I and III and also on the decarboxylation of intermediate porphyrinogens of series III under different conditions using liver of normal and porphyric rats as enzyme source. 2. 2. The same enzyme is involved in the Urogen decarboxylation of both isomeric series I and III and catalyses the four steps in both cases. HCB affects all of them. 3. 3. HCB blocks the four steps of Urogen III decarboxylation to the same degree, as a function of intoxication time. 4. 4. HCB leads, in general, to an increase in the efficiency (Km/Vmax) of the porphyric system. These data can be interpreted as a reaction of the organism to overcome the enzymatic blockade. © 1987.

Descripción: The Maastrichtian-Early Palaeocene Salamanca Formation and equivalent marine sequences show several glaucony levels, which could be used as a source of potassium and could partially replace current fertilizer requirements met from import. First agronomic assays are shown comparing the efficiency of greensands (GL) with a traditional potassium fertilizer (KCl). Prospection and sampling took place in the heads of Rio Chico to east of Lago Colhué Huapi, Chubut, where glauconitic levels thickness reach to 20m. This research was separated in phases: phase 1, prospection, sampling, and sedimentological and chemical routine analyses, phase 2a, concentration and ore treatment assays, and phase 2b, agronomic assays. This last phase, was done in culture chamber, with 125 μm and 250 μm fractions (2,85 and 2,82 % K 2 O respectively) and KCl. Varying the dose, seven treatments were completed. In successive harvests (four in total) was observed that GL1 and GL2 (125), did not present a significantly differential behavior with the control. Both treatments of GL 250 μm showed major accumulated biomass, overcoming the control in 44 and 60 % respectively. As conclusion, better results were obtained by 250 μm overcoming even to the KCl fertilization. Probably the major participation of K feldspars in the 125 μm and fast leaching of K in this fraction during successive irrigations of soil would originate the minor observed yield. The great areal extension of the Salamanca Formation and the continuity of the glauconitic levels encourage continuing the evaluation as fertilizer or amendment.

Descripción: We derive a posteriori error estimates for singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems which yield a guaranteed upper bound on the discretization error and are fully and easily computable. Moreover, they are also locally efficient and robust in the sense that they represent local lower bounds for the actual error, up to a generic constant independent in particular of the reaction coefficient. We present our results in the framework of the vertex-centered finite volume method but their nature is general for any conforming method, like the piecewise linear finite element one. Our estimates are based on a H(div)-conforming reconstruction of the diffusive flux in the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas-Nédélec space linked with mesh dual to the original simplicial one, previously introduced by the last author in the pure diffusion case. They also rely on elaborated Poincaré, Friedrichs, and trace inequalities-based auxiliary estimates designed to cope optimally with the reaction dominance. In order to bring down the ratio of the estimated and actual overall energy error as close as possible to the optimal value of one, independently of the size of the reaction coefficient, we finally develop the ideas of local minimizations of the estimators by local modifications of the reconstructed diffusive flux. The numerical experiments presented confirm the guaranteed upper bound, robustness, and excellent efficiency of the derived estimates. © 2009 EDP Sciences SMAI.

Descripción: A new biosensor was designed for the assessment of aquatic environment quality. Three microalgae were used as toxicity bioindicators: Chlorella vulgaris, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. These microalgae were immobilized in alginate and silica hydrogels in a two step procedure. After studying the growth rate of entrapped cells, chlorophyll fluorescence was measured after exposure to (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) (DCMU) and various concentrations of the common herbicide atrazine. Microalgae are very sensitive to herbicides and detection of fluorescence enhancement with very good efficiency was realized. The best detection limit was 0.1 μM, obtained with the strain C. reinhardtii after 40 minutes of exposure. © 2012 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Descripción: Several species of ecosystem engineers inhabiting coastal environments have been reported structuring different kinds of communities. The magnitude of this influence often depends on the habitat complexity introduced by the engineers. It is commonly accepted that an increase in habitat complexity will result in an increase in diversity and/or abundance in the associated fauna. The rocky salt marshes along the coast of Patagonia are dominated by cordgrasses, mussels, and barnacles forming a mosaic of engineered habitats with different complexity. This system allows us to address the following questions: how different is a macroinvertebrate assemblage when dominated by different ecosystem engineers? And, is there a positive relationship between increasing habitat complexity and the species richness, diversity and total density of the assemblages? To address these questions, we compared the three ecological scenarios with decreasing habitat complexity: cordgrass-mussel, mussel, and barnacle-engineered habitats. We found a total of 22 taxa mostly crustaceans and polychaetes common to all scenarios. The three engineered habitats showed different macroinvertebrate assemblages, mainly due to differences in individual abundances of some taxa. The cryptogenic amphipod Orchestia gammarella was found strictly associated with the cordgrass-mussel habitat. Species richness and diversity were positively related with habitat complexity while total density showed the opposite trend. Our study suggests that species vary their relative distribution and abundances in response to different habitat complexity. Nevertheless, the direction (i. e., neutral, positive or negative) and intensity of the community's response seem to depend on the physiological requirements of the different species and their efficiency to readjust their local spatial distribution in the short term. © 2010 Springer-Verlag and AWI.

Descripción: Lipid-protein interactions play an essential role in the regulation of biological function of integral membrane proteins; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Here we explore the modulation by phospholipids of the enzymatic activity of the plasma membrane calcium pump reconstituted in detergent-phospholipid mixed micelles of variable composition. The presence of increasing quantities of phospholipids in the micelles produced a cooperative increase in the ATPase activity of the enzyme. This activation effect was reversible and depended on the phospholipid/detergent ratio and not on the total lipid concentration. Enzyme activation was accompanied by a small structural change at the transmembrane domain reported by 1-aniline-8-naphtalenesulfonate fluorescence. In addition, the composition of the amphipilic environment sensed by the protein was evaluated by measuring the relative affinity of the assayed phospholipid for the transmembrane surface of the protein. The obtained results allow us to postulate a two-stage mechanistic model explaining the modulation of protein activity based on the exchange among non-structural amphiphiles at the hydrophobic transmembrane surface, and a lipid-induced conformational change. The model allowed to obtain a cooperativity coefficient reporting on the efficiency of the transduction step between lipid adsorption and catalytic site activation. This model can be easily applied to other phospholipid/detergent mixtures as well to other membrane proteins. The systematic quantitative evaluation of these systems could contribute to gain insight into the structure-activity relationships between proteins and lipids in biological membranes. © 2012 Dodes Traian et al.

Descripción: Theoretical, computational, and experimental studies have converged to a model of decision-making in which sensory evidence is stochastically integrated to a threshold, implementing a shift from an analog to a discrete form of computation. Understanding how this process can be chained and sequenced - as virtually all real-life tasks involve a sequence of decisions - remains an open question in neuroscience. We reasoned that incorporating a virtual continuum of possible behavioral outcomes in a simple decision task - a fundamental ingredient of real-life decision-making - should result in a progressive sequential approximation to the correct response. We used real-time tracking of motor action in a decision task, as a measure of cognitive states reflecting an internal decision process. We found that response trajectories were spontaneously segmented into a discrete sequence of explorations separated by brief stops (about 200ms) - which remained unconscious to the participants. The characteristics of these stops were indicative of a decision process - a "moment of thought": their duration correlated with the difficulty of the decision and with the efficiency of the subsequent exploration. Our findings suggest that simple navigation in an abstract space involves a discrete sequence of explorations and stops and, moreover, that these stops reveal a fingerprint of moments of thought. © 2011 Graziano, Polosecki, Shalom and Sigman.

Descripción: An approach was developed to determine triplet quantum yields, ΦT, which overcomes most of the difficulties usually encountered in flash photolysis studies of triplet states. The combined application of near-IR emission and optoacoustics yields ΦT values which are independent of the absorption properties of the triplets. Thus, the triplet energies derived from near-IR phosphorescence spectra together with the values of the heat stored by the triplets determined from optoacoustic experiments afforded ΦT = 0.3 ± 0.1 for porphycene (PO) and 0.4 ± 0.1 for its tetra-n-propyl derivative (TPrPO). Several calorimetric references for optoacoustic measurements in the red region were tested. The ΦT values, combined with flash photolysis data, yielded accurate triplet- minus ground-state absorption coefficients. The quantum yields for singlet molecular oxygen production determined by time-resolved phosphorescence were ΦΔ = 0.34 ± 0.05 for PO and 0.36 ± 0.03 for TPrPO which implies an efficiency near unity for O2(1Δ8) production upon collision of the triplet states of the porphycenes with ground-state O2. © 1990 American Chemical Society.

Descripción: In addition to their role in DNA repair, recombination events are associated with processes aimed at providing the genetic variability needed for adaptation and evolution of a population. In bacteria, recombination is involved in the appearance of new variants by allowing the incorporation of exogenous DNA or the reshuffling of endogenous sequences. Here we show that HpMutS2, a protein belonging to the MutS2 family in Helicobacter pylori, is not involved in mismatch repair but inhibits homologous and homeologous recombination. Disruption of HpmutS2 leads to an increased efficiency of exogenous DNA incorporation. HpMutS2 has a selective affinity for DNA structures mimicking recombination intermediates with no specificity for homoduplex DNA or mismatches. The purified protein has an ATPase activity stimulated by the same DNA structures. Finally, we show that HpMutS2 inhibits DNA strand exchange reactions in vitro. Thus, MutS2 proteins are candidates for controlling recombination and therefore genetic diversity in bacteria.

Descripción: Rhizobium leguminosarum is a soil bacterium that infects root hairs and induces the formation of nitrogen-fixing nodules on leguminous plants. Light, oxygen, and voltage (LOV)-domain proteins are bluelight receptors found in higher plants and many algae, fungi, and bacteria. The genome of R. leguminosarum bv. viciae 3841, a peanodulating endosymbiont, encodes a sensor histidine kinase containing a LOV domain at the N-terminal end (R-LOV-HK). R-LOV-HK has a typical LOV domain absorption spectrum with broad bands in the blue and UV-A regions and shows a truncated photocycle. Here we show that the R-LOV-HK protein regulates attachment to an abiotic surface and production of flagellar proteins and exopolysaccharide in response to light. Also, illumination of bacterial cultures before inoculation of pea roots increases the number of nodules per plant and the number of intranodular bacteroids. The effects of light on nodulation are dependent on a functional lov gene. The results presented in this work suggest that light, sensed by R-LOV-HK, is an important environmental factor that controls adaptive responses and the symbiotic efficiency of R. leguminosarum.

Descripción: The use of more lipophilic derivatives of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is expected to have better diffusing properties, and after conversion into the parent ALA, to reach a higher protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) formation rate, thus improving the efficacy of topical photodynamic therapy (PDT). Here we have analysed the behaviour of 3 ALA derivatives (ALA methyl-ester, hexyl ester and a 2-sided derivative) regarding PPIX formation, efficiency in photosensitizing cells and mechanism of cellular death. The maximum amount of porphyrins synthesized from 0.6 mM ALA was 47 ± 8 ng/105 cells. The same amount was formed by a concentration 60-fold lower of hexyl-ALA and 2-fold higher of methyl-ALA. The 2-sided derivative failed to produce PPIX accumulation. Applying a 0.6 J cm-2 light dose, cell viability decreased to 50%. With the 1.5 J cm-2 light dose, less than 20% of the cells survive, and higher light doses produced nearly total cell killing. Comparing the PPIX production and the induced phototoxicity, the more the amount of porphyrins, the greater the cellular killing, and PPIX formed from either ALA or ALA-esters equally sensitize the cells to photoinactivation. ALA-PDT treated cells exhibited features of apoptosis, independently on the pro-photosensitizer employed. ALA-PDT can be improved with the use of ALA derivatives, reducing the amount of ALA necessary to induce efficient photosensitization. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign.
