Descripción: We study the asymptotic behaviour of nonnegative solutions of the nonlinear diffusion equation in the half-line with a nonlinear boundary condition,{Mathematical expression} with p, q, λ > 0. We describe in terms of p, q and λ when the solution is global in time and when it blows up in finite time. For blow-up solutions we find the blow-up rate and the blow-up set and we describe the asymptotic behaviour close to the blow-up time, showing that a phenomenon of asymptotic simplification takes place. We finally study the appearance of extinction in finite time. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Descripción: We study the asymptotic behavior of a semi-discrete numerical approximation for a pair of heat equations ut = Δu, vt = Δv in Ω × (0, T); fully coupled by the boundary conditions ∂u/∂η = up11vp12, ∂v/∂η = up21vp22 on ∂Ω × (0, T), where Ω is a bounded smooth domain in ℝd. We focus in the existence or not of non-simultaneous blow-up for a semi-discrete approximation (U, V). We prove that if U blows up in finite time then V can fail to blow up if and only if p11 > 1 and p21 < 2(p11 - 1), which is the same condition as the one for non-simultaneous blow-up in the continuous problem. Moreover, we find that if the continuous problem has non-simultaneous blow-up then the same is true for the discrete one. We also prove some results about the convergence of the scheme and the convergence of the blow-up times.

Descripción: We study a parabolic system of two non-linear reaction-diffusion equations completely coupled through source terms and with power-like diffusivity. Under adequate hypotheses on the initial data, we prove that non-simultaneous blow-up is sometimes possible; i.e., one of the components blows up while the other remains bounded. The conditions for non-simultaneous blow-up rely strongly on the diffusivity parameters and significant differences appear between the fast-diffusion and the porous medium case. Surprisingly, flat (homogeneous in space) solutions are not always a good guide to determine whether non-simultaneous blow-up is possible. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Descripción: We study small random perturbations by additive white-noise of a spatial discretization of a reaction-diffusion equation with a stable equilibrium and solutions that blow up in finite time. We prove that the perturbed system blows up with total probability and establish its order of magnitude and asymptotic distribution. For initial data in the domain of explosion we prove that the explosion time converges to the deterministic one while for initial data in the domain of attraction of the stable equilibrium we show that the system exhibits metastable behavior. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.

Descripción: We deal with boundary value problems (prescribing Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions) for a nonlocal nonlinear diffusion operator which is analogous to the porous medium equation. First, we prove existence, uniqueness and the validity of a comparison principle for these problems. Next, we impose boundary data that blow up in finite time and study the behavior of the solutions. © 2007.

Descripción: In this article we analyze the implicitization problem of the image of a rational map φ:X[U+21E2]Pn, with X a toric variety of dimension n-1 defined by its Cox ring R. Let I:=(f0, ..., fn) be n+1 homogeneous elements of R. We blow-up the base locus of φ, V(I), and we approximate the Rees algebra ReesR(I) of this blow-up by the symmetric algebra SymR(I). We provide under suitable assumptions, resolutions Z for SymR(I) graded by the divisor group of X, Cl(X), such that the determinant of a graded strand, det((Z)μ), gives a multiple of the implicit equation, for suitable μ∈Cl(X). Indeed, we compute a region in Cl(X) which depends on the regularity of SymR(I) where to choose μ. We also give a geometrical interpretation of the possible other factors appearing in det((Z)μ). A very detailed description is given when X is a multiprojective space. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.
