Descripción: In this study, carried out in San Antonio Bay (Northern Argentinean Patagonia), we aimed to understand the relative importance of bottom-up and top-down controls on macroalgal blooms in a macrotidal system with high nutrient supply and high consumer abundance. Our results show that nutrients, pH, and O 2 concentrations were higher during low tide. A field experiment showed that the biomass accumulation rate of Ulva lactuca ranged from 6 to 12% d -1 and was reduced by herbivory by 60%. The biomass accumulation rate did not differ in thalli with different initial internal nutrient pools. There was a negative relationship between the percentage of algae consumed and the N content in algal tissues, suggesting compensatory feeding by herbivores. Herbivory reduced the biomass accumulation rate of U. lactuca when PO 4 3- or no nutrients were added, but not when NO 3 - was added. In the absence of herbivory, the addition of nutrients did not increase U. lactuca biomass accumulation rate. These results suggest that nutrients remain high enough for adequate time intervals to be assimilated by macroalgae and support blooms. Large water exchange during tidal changes, however, can diminish the potential negative effects of macroalgal accumulation (oxygen depletion, high ammonium concentrations) on herbivores such that herbivores can have a large impact on macroalgae. © Inter-Research 2011.

Descripción: The European Starling (Stumus vulgaris) was introduced in Argentina by 1987. Starlings are secondary cavity nesters and may constitute a threat to other cavity nesters. We estimated the density of starlings in Buenos Aires city urban parks and examined the relationships between some habitat characteristics and the presence and abundance of starlings. We also evaluated the interactions between starlings and native species, by observations during foraging and nesting. Because starlings may use Rufous Hornero (Fumarius rufus) dome-shaped nests, we also located and observed them. Starlings were recorded in 293 transects distributed in 20.8 km2 corresponding to 103 Buenos Aires public-access parks, in which 447 individuals were recorded. We found that the relative population density for starlings in parks of Buenos Aires (individuals/ha ± SD) was 2.21 ± 0.09. Starling presence was positively associated with the park area and number of palms and negatively with the number of trees. A positive significant association between starling density and number of tipu trees was also found. Neither the presence nor the abundance of starlings was associated with the park's avian species richness. Although starlings were found to feed in heterospecrfic flocks in 60.3% of the 58 observations (totally 464 min), only five interspecific interactions were recorded (the starling being always the losing species). Twenty-one starling nests were built in natural cavities and nine in cavities made by woodpeckers (Colaptes spp). None of the 26 Rufous Hornero nests found was occupied by starlings. However, the nestling cycle of the Golden-breasted Woodpecker (Colaptes melanolaimus) was recorded to be interrupted in three occasions due either to aggressive interactions or to the presence of starlings near the nests. Descripción: Nearly all data regarding land-plant turnover across the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary come from western North America, relatively close to the Chicxulub, Mexico impact site. Here, we present a palynological analysis of a section in Patagonia that shows a marked fall in diversity and abundance of nearly all plant groups across the K/Pg interval. Minimum diversity occurs during the earliest Danian, but only a few palynomorphs show true extinctions. The low extinction rate is similar to previous observations from New Zealand. The differing responses between the Southern and Northern hemispheres could be related to the attenuation of damage with increased distance from the impact site, to hemispheric differences in extinction severity, or to both effects. Legacy effects of the terminal Cretaceous event also provide a plausible, partial explanation for the fact that Paleocene and Eocene macrofloras from Patagonia are among the most diverse known globally. Also of great interest, earliest Danian assemblages are dominated by the gymnosperm palynomorphs Classopollis of the extinct Mesozoic conifer family Cheirolepidiaceae. The expansion of Classopollis after the boundary in Patagonia is another example of typically Mesozoic plant lineages surviving into the Cenozoic in southern Gondwanan areas, and this greatly supports previous hypotheses of high latitude southern regions as biodiversity refugia during the end-Cretaceous global crisis. © 2012 Barreda et al.

Descripción: We analyzed the effect of density-dependent habitat selection and interspecific competition on the use of space by small rodent species in agroecosystems. We studied rodent abundance in cropfields and their borders, weedy margins less disturbed by agricultural activities. We could distinguish two kind of species: those habitat intolerants, Akodon azarae and Oligoryzomys flavescens, which select the borders, and those habitat tolerants, Calomys laucha and Calomys musculinus. The two most abundant species in the community, A. azarae and C. Laucha, differ in their habitat use: while the first has a clear preference for borders, the other is more equally distributed between habitats, although it is more abundant in fields. Both species show a shift towards an increased use of fields via density-dependent habitat selection with increasing abundance at some moments of the year. C. musculinus does not show habitat preference in any season, overlaping with the other species in both habitats. There is an interspecific effect on habitat use between A. azarae and C. laucha : While the first species cause a shift in habitat preference of C. laucha towards fields, this latter species affects the density-dependent habitat use of A. azarae. It is concluded that the pattern of habitat use of the studied species is affected by their differential preferences as well as by intra and interspecific density-dependent processes that change seasonally.

Descripción: We examined the zooplankton abundance and composition of Laguna Grande, a floodplain wetland of the Lower Paraná Basin (Argentina), during an extraordinary drought-flood cycle that affected both the environment and the biological conditions of the lake. Low waters were characterised by remarkably high conductivities and pH values, and high phytoplankton and bacterioplankton abundances with cyanobacterial blooms, while high waters showed opposite features. In relation to zooplankton, the mean abundances of all the taxonomic groups (rotifers, cladocerans, copepods, ciliates, and heterotrophic nanoflagellates) were slightly higher at low waters. Major changes were observed in the specific composition of metazooplankton: the euryhaline species assemblage that dominated in the dry warm period was replaced by several oligohaline littoral and planktonic species characteristic of the Paraná River Basin, when the water level rose. Mean species richness values at high waters doubled those of low waters and were directly correlated to water depth. Most of the rotifers of the genus Brachionus and the cladoceran Moina micrura switched from parthenogenetic to sexual reproduction during low waters, as a response to a harsh environment and crowding. We suggest that the main changes in the environmental conditions in this eutrophic floodplain lake are driven by the hydrology, which regulates the zooplankton succession. The herein described shifts in the zooplankton structure and dynamics of Laguna Grande over an extraordinary drought-flood cycle contribute to the understanding of the processes that might occur under the scenarios predicted by climate change models. © 2011 Elsevier GmbH.

Descripción: We report results of dietary analyses of Akodon azarae and Calomys laucha and of food availability in corn fields and their borders in the Pampean region of central Argentina. Sampling was conducted at different developmental crop stages, in order to assess the influence of food availability on diet and reproductive performance. Both species were generalistic and opportunistic feeders, but differed in food habits and nutritional requirements for reproduction : A azarae had omnivorous diets and its breeding activity was related to high requirements of insects, whereas C. laucha was mainly an herbivorous-granivorous feeder and required high amounts of green forage to improve its reproductive performance. We discuss the role that food availability may play as a potential factor for competitive interactions at the different crop stages, regarding the changes in abundance of both species and their differences in diet, competitive ability, habitat preferences and colonizing potential. © 1992, Walter de Gruyter. Descripción: A study is presented of the role of cholesterol content on the gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition of freeze-dried liposomes stabilized with trehalose, a well known lyoprotectant. The phospholipids considered in this work, DPPC and DPPE, belong to the two predominant phospholipid species found in numerous biological membranes. Cholesterol is found in abundance in mammalian plasma membranes. DSC measurements reveal that cholesterol-containing liposomes exhibit multiple phase transitions upon dehydration. Addition of trehalose to these systems lowers the phase transition temperature and limits the phase separation of the lipidic components upon freeze-drying. This work provides strong evidence for the effectiveness of trehalose in stabilizing cholesterol-containing membranes upon lyophilization. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Descripción: We generated a map of wetlands in Argentina from the digital edition of the National Soil Inventory made by the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria, INTA). Potencial wetland areas were extracted from the map after an exhaustive analysis of the database and reassignment of the soil classes, by taking into account 1) soil taxonomic classes; 2) constraining factors (waterlogging, flooding, drainage impairment); and 3) cartographic categories, including lakes, lagoons, marshes and salt lakes. Estimated wetland area is about 600,000 km2, representing 21.5% of the national territory; it increases to 23% when considering salt lakes and deepwater bodies, but their surface is underestimated in the INTA database. Finally, we analyzed the distribution and abundance of wetland areas from different eco-regions of Argentina, and compared our results with current global wetland databases.

Descripción: Three species of Eryngium that constitute new records or problematic taxa for the Floras of Argentina and Uruguay are presented. E. balansae, known from Paraguay and Brazil, is recorded from Argentina for the first time. E. regnellii, originally described from Brazil, is recorded here from Argentina and Uruguay. This species, abundant in highlands of both countries, was in previously confused with E. stenophyllum in floristic and ecological studies. This last name designates an infrequent and poorly known species, and thus it is considered appropriate to here recharacterize it. For each of these three taxa a description, illustrations and a distribution map is provided, as well as a key to the Argentine species of Eryngium sect. Parmiculata ser. Latifolia, the group to which the three entities belong.

Descripción: Some of the Biomphalaria species living in Chaco, such as B. straminea and B. tenagophila, are natural transmitters of schistosomiasis in Brazil, while those of the genus Drepanotrema are not intermediate hosts of the disease. The aim of the present work was to analyze the importance of a selected set of environmental variables in explaining patterns of distributions and relative abundance of planorbid gastropod assemblages. The study sites were located in urban areas of Resistencia City, Chaco Province, and the environmental variables measured were substratum (macrophytes), water quality (pH, O2, nutrients, among others), as well as other gastropods (Ancylidae, Hydrobiidae and Ampullaridae). Seasonal samplings were carried out in four distinct environments. Thirty-one quantitative samples of gastropods and environmental variables were obtained. In canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), seven environmental variables were retained after a stepwise forward selection, from a total of 26, including [N-NH4+], O2%, and the macrophytes Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Panicum elephantipes, Hydrocotyle ranunculoides and Canna glauca. They explained 62% of the variation in planorbid association. Canna glauca was the most significant variable, being positively correlated with all of the species of Drepanotrema. Axis I separates B. tenagophila from B. straminea, along a gradient related to increasing O 2% and P. elephantipes abundance, as well as decreasing [N-NH 4+] and P. stratiotes. Axis II separates D. lucidum, D. anatinum and D. cimex from the other planorbid species along a gradient associated with decreasing abundances of H. ranunculoides and C. glauca. Some common aquatic macrophytes, and to a lesser extent, dissolved oxygen and ammonium in water, may be useful indicators of favorable environmental conditions for potential intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis in Chaco Region.

Descripción: As in most insect groups, host plant shifts in cactophilic Drosophila represent environmental challenges as flies must adjust their developmental programme to the presence of different chemical compounds and/or to a microflora that may differ in the diversity and abundance of yeasts and bacteria. In this context, wing morphology provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the factors that may induce changes during development. In this work, we investigated phenotypic plasticity and developmental instability of wing morphology in flies on the cactophilic Drosophila buzzatii and Drosophila koepferae raised on alternative breeding substrates. We detected significant differences in wing size between and within species, and between flies reared on different cactus hosts. However, differences in wing shape between flies emerged from different cactus hosts were not significant either in D. buzzatii or in D. koepferae. Our results also showed that morphological responses involved the entire organ, as variation in size and shape correlated between different portions of the wing. Finally, we studied the effect of the rearing cactus host on developmental instability as measured by the degree of fluctuating asymmetry (FA). Levels of FA in wing size were significantly greater in flies of both species reared in non-preferred when compared with those reared in preferred host cacti. Our results are discussed in the framework of an integrative view aimed at investigating the relevance of host plant shifts in the evolution of the guild of cactophilic Drosophila species that diversified in South America. © 2007 The Authors.

Descripción: With aging, the kidney develops a progressive deterioration of several structures and functions. Proximal tubular acidification is impaired in old rats with a decrease in the activity of brush border Na+/ H+ exchange and a fall of H-ion flux measured with micropuncture experiments. In the present work we evaluate the contribution of 5-N-ethyl-n-isopropyl amiloride- (EIPA) and bafilomycin-sensitive bicarbonate flux (JHCO3-) in proximal convoluted tubules of young and aged rats. We performed micropuncture experiments inhibiting the Na+/H+ exchanger with EIPA (10-4 M) and the V-H+ ATPase with bafilomycin (10-6 M). We used antibodies against the NHE3 isoform of the Na+/H+ exchanger and the subunit E of the V-H+ ATPase for detecting by Western blot the abundance of these proteins in brush border membrane vesicles from proximal convoluted tubules of young and old rats. The abundance of NHE3 and the V-H+ ATPase was similar in 18-month-old and 3-month-old rats. The bicarbonate flux in old rats was 30% lower than in young rats. EIPA reduced JHCO3- by 60% and bafilomycin by 30% in young rats; in contrast, EIPA reduced JHCO3- by ∼40% and bafilomycin by ∼50% in old rats. The JHCO3- inhibited by bafilomycin was the same in young and old rats: 0.62.nmol · cm-2 · s-1 and 0.71.nmol · cm-2 · s-1, respectively. However, the EIPA-sensitive fraction was larger in young than in old rats: 1.26.nmol · cm-2 · s-1 vs. 0.85 nmol · cm-2 · s-1, respectively. Descripción: Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) often possess a negative proton thermal anisotropy, Ap = T⊥,p/T ∥.p - 1 < 0 (T∥, T⊥: parallel and perpendicular temperatures, respectively) so that right-hand polarized electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves (EICWs) may be amplified by a kinetic instability [Famigia et ai, 1998a]. However, in view of the low proton beta of ICMEs, several physical parameters, besides Ap, need to be in the right range to excite this instability with significant growth rates. In this paper we present a parametric study of EICWs aimed at identifying those parameters which are most influential in fostering the emission of these waves in ICME scenarios. We analyze here the influence of: (1) thermal and suprathermal protons, (2) thermal alpha particles (αs), and (3) thermal electrons. We solve the dispersion relation of EICWs including protons, αs and electrons, all modeled with bi-Maxwellian distribution functions, and a minority population of suprathermal protons using a kappa function for the velocity component along the field. For physical regimes of ICMEs we find that the instability depends critically on the values of the following parameters: proton beta, proton thermal anisotropy, relative abundance of the suprathermal protons, α-to-proton relative abundance, α-to-proton temperature ratio, α particle thermal anisotropy, electron-to-proton temperature ratio, and thermal anisotropy of electrons. The effect of these parameters on the instability is either direct (when they increase the number of resonant particles) or indirect (when they decrease the phase speed of the wave so that more particles can resonate). Data surveys òn EICWs should take into account the whole set of parameters indicated here, since the expected level of wave excitation results from their combined action. The study may be useful in understanding the considerable level of magnetic fluctuations observed in interplanetary CMEs by the Wind spacecraft. Copyright 2003 by the American Geophysical Union.

Descripción: Used vehicle tires are a source of mosquito vectors and a means of their introduction and expansion. With the aim of assessing the effects of urbanisation on the main mosquito vectors in temperate Argentina, the infestation levels of Aedes aegypti (L.) and Culex pipiens L. were studied in used tires from highly urbanised cities to low-urbanised small towns in Buenos Aires. Immatures of both species accounted for 96% of the 9,722 individuals collected; the total individuals collected represented seven species. The percentage of water-filled tires containing mosquitoes [container index (CI)] was 33% and the percentage of infested sites [site index (SI)] was 65.2%. These indexes decreased significantly from low to high urbanisation levels for both mosquito species. The relative abundance (RA) of Ae. aegypti immatures was slightly higher toward large cities, but showed no difference for Cx. pipiens. The CI of shaded tires was significantly higher than the CI of exposed tires for both mosquito species. There was no difference in RA values between shaded and sunlit tires. The CI and the SI were highest during the summer across the urbanisation levels, except for Cx. pipiens, which continued to increase during the autumn in small towns. Results related to urbanisation gradient, sunlit exposure and seasonality are discussed.

Descripción: Coupling between pelagic and benthic systems has been described in numerous shallow water communities. In Potter Cove, where pelagic primary production is low (not only during the Antarctic winter but also during the summer), the rich benthic community present there must depend on other food sources than phytoplankton. Over a year-round period we determined the abundance of the different seston particles which constituted the stomach contents of the Antarctic ascidian Cnemidocarpa verrucosa (Lesson, 1830) at Potter Cove. Stomach repletion was highest in November and lowest in June. Ascidians took in a wide range of particles from large detritus (macroalgal debris and faecal pellets) to minute particles < 5 μm. Large detritus and minute particles together represent the main percentage of contents throughout the year (mean 91%). Diatoms were a low percentage (mean 4.5%). Unidentified flagellates, dinoflagellates and coccolithophorids were scarce, with mean values lower than 4%. Among diatoms benthic species were more abundant in summer and pelagic ones prevailed from March to November. Resuspension of benthic material due to wind mixing and the input of allochthonous particles by currents are important mechanisms that ensure food for ascidians and the community of suspension feeders in Potter Cove.

Descripción: We studied the dietary niche of the Barn Owl (Tyto alba) in temperate agroecosystems of central Argentina by describing seasonal and geographic variation in the food habits of this owl in four districts of the Pampean region (Flooding, Inland, Rolling, and Southern Pampas). We identified 21,925 prey items from samples of fresh pellets collected in summer (n = 23) and winter (n = 26). Mammals,' mostly sigmodontine rodents, were the main prey items (91.9%), followed by amphibians (6.5%) and birds (1.6%). Arthropods were also a common prey item (found in 45% of the samples). The consumption of arthropods and amphibians was higher in summer than in winter, indicating that seasonal changes in prey abundances are reflected in the Barn Owl diet. We found no differences in food-niche breadth among the four study districts, but food-niche breadth varied between seasons, being higher during summer. Six rodent species were common to all districts: Calomys spp., Akodon azarae, Oligoryzomys flavescens, Mus musculus, Rattus spp., and Holochilus brasiliensis. Calomys spp. was numerically dominant in 46 of the 49 samples, and together with A. azarae and O. flavescens comprised the bulk of the diet (> 80%). Predation on rodents may reflect population dynamics of the prey species with high predation rates when peaks in abundance of sigmodontine rodents occurred (autumn-winter). © The Neotropical Ornithological Society.

Descripción: The pressure exerted by consumers has generally been considered to be among the main factors affecting the structure and processes in marine communities. Here, we assessed the effects of the predatory starfish Heliaster helianthus on substrate colonization by the dominant mussel Semimytilus algosus in a rocky intertidal area of the central Peruvian coast. We conducted 3 experiments: exclusions of starfish (1) from the edge of mussel beds, (2) from areas on bare substrate and (3) from areas surrounding recruitment mediators (i.e. branched macroalgae). The exclusion of H. helianthus resulted in increased cover of S. algosus in the 3 experiments. However, the colonization of the available space by S. algosus in the absence of starfish was more evident when facilitated by recruitment mediators or by migration from the edge of mussel beds than when colonization occurred during succession starting from bare substrate. By the end of the study period, however, increased S. algosus abundance, which coincided with the end of the cold phase (La Niña) of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, overwhelmed the effects of starfish. We suggest that periodic oceanographic fluctuations are also important in controlling community dynamics in Peruvian rocky intertidal zones, highlighting the variation in the relative importance of top-down versus bottom-up control when different temporal scales are considered. © Inter-Research 2011.

Descripción: Possible consequences of climate change in one of the world's largest wetlands (Ibera, Argentina) were analysed using a multi-scale approach. Climate projections coupled to hydrological models were used to analyse variability in wetland water level throughout the current century. Two potential scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions were explored, both resulting in an increase in the inter-annual fluctuations of the water level. In the scenario with higher emissions, projections also showed a long-term negative trend in water-level. To explore the possible response of biota to such water-level changes, species-area relationships of flora and aerial censuses of macro-fauna were analysed during an extraordinary dry period. Plant species richness at the basin scale was found to be highly resistant to hydrological changes, as the large dimension of the wetland acts to buffer against the water-level variations. However, local diversity decreased significantly with low water levels, leading to the loss of ecosystem resilience to additional stressors. The analysis of macro-fauna populations suggested that wetland provides refuge, in low water periods, for the animals with high dispersal ability (aquatic and migratory birds). On the contrary, the abundance of animals with low dispersal ability (mainly herbivorous species) was negatively impacted in low water periods, probably because they are required to search for alternative resources beyond the wetland borders. This period of resource scarcity was also related to increased mortality of large mammals (e.g. marsh deer) around water bodies with high anthropogenic enrichment and cyanobacteria dominance. The synergy between recurrent climatic fluctuations and additional stressors (i.e. biological invasions, eutrophication) presents an important challenge to the conservation of neotropical wetlands in the coming decades. © 2013 Úbeda et al.

Descripción: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of chlorpyrifos on earthworms and on soil functional parameters. An integrated laboratory-field study was performed in a wheat fi eld in Argentina, sprayed with chlorpyrifos at two recommended application rates (240 or 960 g ha -1 a.i.). Laboratory tests included neutral red retention time, comet assay (single cell gel electrophoresis), and avoidance behavior, each using the earthworm Eisenia andrei exposed in soil collected 1 or 14 days after pesticide application, and the bait-lamina test. Field tests assessed organic matter breakdown using the litterbag and bait-lamina assays. Earthworm populations in the field were assessed using formalin application and hand-sorting. The neutral red retention time and comet assays were sensitive biomarkers to the effects of chlorpyrifos on the earthworm E. andrei; however, the earthworm avoidance test was not sufficiently robust to assess these effects. Feeding activity of soil biota, assessed by the bait lamina test, was significantly inhibited by chlorpyrifos after 97 days, but recovered by the 118th day of the test. Litterbag test showed no significant differences in comparison to controls. Earthworm abundance in the fi eld was too low to adequately test the sensitivity of this assessment endpoint.
