Descripción: An experimental validation of an model for the production of birdsongs was discussed. The derivation of the model with functions whose time dependence came from recordings of muscle activities and air sac pressure was studied. It was found that birds' songs were recorded and compared with the synthetic songs. Some predictions of the model concerning the relative levels of activity in the gating muscles at the beginning and end of a syllable were also tested.

Descripción: The effects of rapid rotation and bi-stability upon the density contrast between the equatorial and polar directions of a B[e] supergiant are re-investigated. Based on a new slow solution for different high rotational radiation-driven winds and the fact that bi-stability allows a change in the line-force parameters (α, k, and δ), the equatorial densities are about 102-104 times higher than the polar ones. Descripción: We study a cost function for the aggregate behavior of all the agents involved in the minority game (MG) or the bar attendance model (BAM). The cost function allows us to define a deterministic, synchronous dynamic that yields results that have the main relevant features than those of the probabilistic, sequential dynamics used for the MG or the BAM. We define a temperature through a Langevin approach in terms of the fluctuations of the average attendance. We prove that the cost function is an extensive quantity that can play the role of an internal energy of the many-agent system while the temperature so defined is an intensive parameter. We compare the results of the thermal perturbation to the deterministic dynamics and prove that they agree with those obtained with the MG or BAM in the limit of very low temperature. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Descripción: Plasma temperature and radial density profiles of the plasma species in a high energy density cutting arc have been obtained by using a quantitative schlieren technique. A Z-type two-mirror schlieren system was used in this research. Due to its great sensibility such technique allows measuring plasma composition and temperature from the arc axis to the surrounding medium by processing the gray-level contrast values of digital schlieren images recorded at the observation plane for a given position of a transverse knife located at the exit focal plane of the system. The technique has provided a good visualization of the plasma flow emerging from the nozzle and its interactions with the surrounding medium and the anode. The obtained temperature values are in good agreement with those values previously obtained by the authors on the same torch using Langmuir probes. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: Context. Relating in-situ measurements of relativistic solar particles to their parent activity in the corona requires understanding the magnetic structures that guide them from their acceleration site to the Earth. Relativistic particle events are observed at times of high solar activity, when transient magnetic structures such as interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) often shape the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). They may introduce interplanetary paths that are longer than nominal, and magnetic connections rooted far from the nominal Parker spiral. Aims. We present a detailed study of the IMF configurations during ten relativistic solar particle events of the 23rd activity cycle to elucidate the actual IMF configuration that guides the particles to the Earth, where they are measured by neutron monitors. Methods. We used magnetic field (MAG) and plasma parameter measurements (SWEPAM) from the ACE spacecraft and determined the interplanetary path lengths of energetic particles through a modified version of the velocity dispersion analysis based on energetic particle measurements with SoHO/ERNE. Results. We find that the majority (7/10) of the events is detected in the vicinity of an ICME. Their interplanetary path lengths are found to be longer (1.5-2.6 AU) than those of the two events propagating in the slow solar wind (1.3 AU). The longest apparent path length is found in an event within the fast solar wind, probably caused by enhanced pitch angle scattering. The derived path lengths imply that the first energetic and relativistic protons are released at the Sun at the same time as electron beam emitting type III radio bursts. Conclusions. The timing of the first high-energy particle arrival on Earth is mainly determined by the type of IMF in which the particles propagate. Initial arrival times are as expected from Parker's model in the slow solar wind, and significantly longer in or near transient structures such as ICMEs. © 2012 ESO.

Descripción: We have calculated the electrical conductivity in the current-in-plane geometry of multilayered granular alloys composed of Co clusters embedded in Ag alternating with pure Ag layers. In particular, we have paid attention to the conductivity behavior as a function of Ag layer thickness, Co clusters' size, and degree of percolation. The electronic structure is self-consistently calculated within the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation using a parametrized tight binding Hamiltonian which includes a Hubbard-like term. The conductivity tensor is obtained by using the semiclassical Boltzmann equation in the anisotropic relaxation time approximation. We have used a s-d Mott-like scattering model for the electronic mean free path taking into account the Sondheimer's picture for electronic transport in thin films. We find that the experimental conductivity behavior at coalescence can be explained through the electronic band contribution. The conductivity behavior of continuous multilayers is already attained in the very early stage of percolation, as in the experiments. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: We report experimental results on the magnetic and transport properties of Ag/Co 90Fe 10 multilayers with variable Ag and Co 90Fe 10 thicknesses. The magnetism samples was characterized by magnetization measurements and ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. These measurements show that the magnetic layers are in general composed by single-domain particles and that the shape and the size of the magnetic clusters can be changed by using an applied magnetic field (H dep) on deposition. The resistivity of these multilayered systems is described by a mixed model that includes current-in-plane and current perpendicular plane transport contributions. The transport model proposed to explain the experimental results emphasizes the role played by the magnetic entities on the scattering processes and strongly depends on the silver layer thickness. An electrical percolative transition is observed for samples grown at H dep>H* dep while the magnetic properties of these samples still show a granularlike behavior. © 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: Langmuir probe measurements in an atmospheric pressure direct current (dc) plasma jet are reported. Sweeping probes were used. The experiment was carried out using a dc non-transferred arc torch with a rod-type cathode and an anode of 5 mm diameter. The torch was operated at a nominal power level of 15 kW with a nitrogen flow rate of 25 Nl min -1. A flat ion saturation region was found in the current-voltage curve of the probe. The ion saturation current to a cylindrical probe in a high-pressure non local thermal equilibrium (LTE) plasma was modeled. Thermal effects and ionization/recombination processes inside the probe perturbed region were taken into account. Averaged radial profiles of the electron and heavy particle temperatures as well as the electron density were obtained. An electron temperature around 11 000 K, a heavy particle temperature around 9500 K and an electron density of about 4 × 10 22 m -3, were found at the jet centre at 3.5 mm downstream from the torch exit. Large deviations from kinetic equilibrium were found throughout the plasma jet. The electron and heavy particle temperature profiles showed good agreement with those reported in the literature by using spectroscopic techniques. It was also found that the temperature radial profile based on LTE was very close to that of the electrons. The calculations have shown that this method is particularly useful for studying spraying-type plasma jets characterized by electron temperatures in the range 9000-14 000 K. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: In order to isolate very strong promoters from bacteria and bacteriophage a plasmid named pProm was constructed. It possesses an origin (ORI) for replication in Gram-negative bacteria, an ORI for replication in Gram-positive bacteria, a promoterless ampicillin resistance gene with a multiple cloning site (MCS) in the position formerly occupied by the ampicillin promoter, a tetracycline resistance gene for selection in Gram-negative bacteria and a chloramphenicol resistance gene for selection in Gram-positive bacteria. Insertion in the MCS of DNA fragments of Staphylococcus aureus bacteriophages resulted in isolation of several clones very resistant to ampicillin. The DNA fragments inserted in these recombinant plasmids were sequenced and all of them contained putative promoter motifs. Direct measurement of the penicillinase activity indicated that one of the isolated promoters could be included within a group of the stronger known prokaryotic promoters. According to these results pProm is a powerful tool to perform studies on promoter strength and for industrial applications. Copyright (C) 1999 Federation of European Microbiological Societies.

Descripción: A two-wavelength quantitative Schlieren technique that allows inferring the electron and gas densities of axisymmetric arc plasmas without imposing any assumption regarding statistical equilibrium models is reported. This technique was applied to the study of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) departures within the core of a 30 A high-energy density cutting arc. In order to derive the electron and heavy particle temperatures from the inferred density profiles, a generalized two-temperature Saha equation together with the plasma equation of state and the quasineutrality condition were employed. Factors such as arc fluctuations that influence the accuracy of the measurements and the validity of the assumptions used to derive the plasma species temperature were considered. Significant deviations from chemical equilibrium as well as kinetic equilibrium were found at elevated electron temperatures and gas densities toward the arc core edge. An electron temperature profile nearly constant through the arc core with a value of about 14000-15000 K, well decoupled from the heavy particle temperature of about 1500 K at the arc core edge, was inferred. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: Background: The vast computational resources that became available during the past decade enabled the development and simulation of increasingly complex mathematical models of cancer growth. These models typically involve many free parameters whose determination is a substantial obstacle to model development. Direct measurement of biochemical parameters in vivo is often difficult and sometimes impracticable, while fitting them under data-poor onditions may result in biologically implausible values. Results: We discuss different methodological approaches to estimate parameters in complex biological models. We make use of the high computational power of the Blue Gene technology to perform an extensive study of the parameter space in a model of avascular tumor growth. We explicitly show that the landscape of the cost function used to optimize the model to the data has a very rugged surface in parameter space. This cost function has many local minima with unrealistic solutions, including the global minimum corresponding to the best fit. Conclusions: The case studied in this paper shows one example in which model parameters that optimally fit the data are not necessarily the best ones from a biological point of view. To avoid force-fitting a model to a dataset, we propose that the best model parameters should be found by choosing, among suboptimal parameters, those that match criteria other than the ones used to fit the model. We also conclude that the model, data and optimization approach form a new complex system and point to the need of a theory that addresses this problem more generally. © 2010 Fernandez Slezak et al.

Descripción: Background: Resolving the kinetics of agonist binding events separately from the subsequent channel gating processes requires the ability of applying and removing the agonist before channel gating occurs. No reported system has yet achieved pulses shorter than 100 μs, necessary to study nicotinic ACh receptor or AMPA receptor activation. Methodology/Principal Findings: Solution exchange systems deliver short agonist pulses by moving a sharp interface between a control and an experimental solution across a channel preparation. We achieved shorter pulses by means of an exchange system that combines a faster flow velocity, narrower partition between the two streams, and increased velocity and bandwidth of the movement of the interface. The measured response of the entire system was fed back to optimize the voltage signal applied to the piezoelectric actuator overcoming the spurious oscillations arising from the mechanical resonances when a high bandwidth driving function was applied. Optimization was accomplished by analyzing the transfer function of the solution exchange system. When driven by optimized command pulses the enhanced system provided pulses lasting 26 ± 1 μs and exchanging 93 ± 1% of the solution, as measured in the open tip of a patch pipette. Conclusions/Significance: Pulses of this duration open the experimental study of the molecular events that occur between the agonist binding and the opening of the channel. © 2012 Auzmendi et al.

Descripción: A model is developed to describe the electrostatic boundary layer in a positively biased magnetic filter in filtered arcs with low collisionality. The set of equations used includes the electron momentum equation, with an anomalous collision term due to micro-instabilities leading to Bohm diffusion, electron mass conservation, and Poisson equation. Analytical solutions are obtained, valid for the regimes of interest, leading to an explicit expression to determine the electron density current to the filter wall as a function of the potential of the filter and the ratio of electron density at the plasma to that at the filter wall. Using a set of planar and cylindrical probes it is verified experimentally that the mentioned ratio of electron densities remains reasonably constant for different magnetic field values and probe bias, which allows to obtain a closed expression for the current. Comparisons are made with the experimentally determined current collected at different sections of a positively biased straight filter. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: Split lamellae of posterior gills of Chasmagnathus granulatus adapted to 2.5‰ salinity were mounted in a modified Ussing chamber. With NaCl-saline on both sides of the preparation a transepithelial voltage (Vte) of 4.1±0.5 mV (outside positive) was measured. After voltage-clamping, the negative short-circuit current (Isc) amounted to -142±21 μA cm-2 at a conductance (Gte) of 44±5 mS cm-2. Substitution of either chloride (by nitrate) or sodium (by choline) on both sides of split gill lamellae significantly reduced Isc (by 70-80%) and Gte (by 30-50%). External CsCl (but not BaCl2 or furosemide) inhibited the negative Isc without affecting Gte. Addition of ouabain, BaCl2 or diphenylamine-2-carboxylate to the internal bath inhibited Isc at unchanged Gte. Internal acetazolamide did not affect Isc or Gte across split gill lamellae. Unidirectional Na+ influx across isolated and perfused posterior gills, however, was reduced by internal acetazolamide by approximately 20% at constant Vte. The results suggest that posterior gills of hyperosmoregulating C. granulatus display a high conductance epithelium that actively absorbs NaCl in a coupled way by an electrogenic mechanism similar to that seen in the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop and, to a minor degree, by an electroneutral mechanism, presumably via apical Na+/H+and Cl-/HCO3--antiports.
