Descripción: We examined diurnal and nocturnal nectar secretion across sexual stages in protandrous Alstroemeria aurea, a bumble bee-pollinated herb with long-lived flowers native to the southern Andes. We found the following patterns: (1) most nectar was produced diurnally and (2) three times more sugar was secreted during the male than female phase, not only because the male phase lasted longer but also because the rate of nectar production was higher. This 3:1 ratio in nectar production matched the ratio of the minimum number of bumble bee visits required on average to saturate male (pollen removal) vs. female (seed set) functions. Standing crop of nectar, on the other hand, did not differ greatly between male- and female-stage flowers left open to visitors, because the high-production male-phase flowers were visited more frequently than female-phase flowers. In an experiment concurrent with the repeated nectar sampling of individual flowers over their life-span, we removed pollen from anthers or deposited pollen on stigmas by hand. Neither treatment, designed to mimic effects of visits by Alstroemeria's native bumble bee pollinator, affected nectar production. The absence of plasticity in nectar secretion in relation to pollination events may reflect a low cost of nectar production, or may result from developmental constraints related to the evolution of the synchronous protandry that characterizes A. aurea.

Descripción: Factors affecting mating behaviour in the bug Triatoma infestans were quantitatively studied in the laboratory. Experimental conditions were established so that the probability of copulation increased with the time elapsed since the first adult meal. Copulatory attempts by males did not vary as a function of time, but rejections by females became significantly less frequent with the post feeding time. Non-receptive females displayed four types of rejection behaviour, i.e. flattening, stridulation, evasion and abdominal movements. The occurrence of stridulation performed by females in a sexual context was observed in a regular fashion and was quantified for the first time in this species.

Descripción: Specimens and eggs masses of the gastropod Trochita pileus were collected during a research cruise by bottom trawling at depths between 82 m and 120 m. Adult T. pileus were found attached to such hard substrata as the shells of scallops and oysters. The egg mass of T. pileus is composed of 7-8 transparent, triangular-shaped egg capsules fixed to the substratum with stalks. Four egg masses collected from brooding females, with a total number of 241 embryos, were examined. Trochita pileus is a protandrous hermaphrodite, and histological studies of the male, transitional, and female gonads were performed. The testicular portion of the gonad in both male and transitional individuals and the ovary of the female were studied by histological techniques. Spermatogenesis was observed for males and transitional individuals.

Descripción: This study documents differences in the courtship behavior of wild strains of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) from Madeira (Portugal), Hawaii (U.S.A.), Costa Rica, and Patagonia (Argentina). Some traits showed large variations and others substantial overlaps. The angle at which the male faced toward the female at the moment of transition from continuous wing vibration and intermittent buzzing changed very little during the course of courtship in all strains, but males from Madeira tended to face more directly toward the female than other males. Females tended to look more, and more directly, toward the males as courtship progressed in all strains. The distance between male and female tended to decrease as courtship proceeded in all strains, but the distances at which males initiated continuous vibration, intermittent buzzing, and jumped onto the female were relatively less variable between strains, except for the strain from Costa Rica. Flies of Madeira courted for longer and the male moved his head and buzzed his wings longer than the other strains.

Descripción: The life cycle of Ascocotyle (Leighia) hadra n. sp. was experimentally reproduced, starting from cercariae from naturally infected Littoridina parchappei, collected from Los Ranchos stream, near Mercedes city, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Metacercariae were found encysted in the liver and mesentery of experimentally and naturally infected fishes Cnesterodon decemmaculatus and Jenynsia lineata. Adults were obtained experimentally in chicks and mice. The natural host is unknown. The new species is compared with Ascocotyle (Leighia) mcintoshi Price 1936 as described by Leigh, 1974, differing in behavior and morphology of cercarial, metacercarial and adult stages.

Descripción: Medical and biochemical analysis were performed on 58 patients with chronic alcoholism. In accordance with medical characterisation, patients were divided in three groups: A (patients having only hepatopathy), B (patients with hepatopathy and neuropathy) and C (patients having only alcoholic neuropathy). Simultaneously, several parameters related to heme biosynthesis were examined. Urinary delta-aminolevulic acid (ALA), porphobilinogen (PBG) and porphyrins and fecal porphyrins measurements did not show significant difference among all studied groups. The activities of ALA-dehydratase (ALA-D), uroporphyrinogen-I-synthase (URO-I-S) and uroporphyrinogen-III-synthase (URO-III-S) were monitored in peripheral erythrocytes. From the enzymes measured, only ALA-D levels in groups B and C were significantly depressed (p < 0.002) compared with normal subjects. The decrease in ALA-D correlated with the degree of neuropathy.

Descripción: Stenurus globicephalae Baylis et Daubney, 1925 (Nematoda: Pseudaliidae) was found in the cranial air sinuses of a false killer whale, Pseudorca crassidens (Owen), stranded on the coast of Uruguay in 1999. Although this species has been reported once in P. crassidens from the North Atlantic, this is the first record for South America. A total of 920 specimens were obtained, of which 663 were females (body length: 4.34 ± 0.45 cm) and 257 were males (2.99 ± 0.18 cm). Morphometric details are presented for S. globicephalae in this host, which do not show significant differences from those parasitizing Globicephala melas (Traill), but are distinct from those parasitizing Peponocephala electra (Gray), The host's skull revealed loss of osseous mass with the disappearance of the left zygomatic arch, and the left jaw had three osseous fenestrations in the region related to the organ of acoustic reception. These lesions support the hypothesis that this infection, known as stenurosis, was related to the stranding.

Descripción: The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that mediates most of the toxic and endocrine-disruptive actions of aromatic compounds in the ovary. Paradoxically, this receptor has been shown to play important roles in normal female reproductive function as well. Although knowledge of AHR expression regulation in the ovary is of crucial significance to understand the receptor biology and its function in reproductive physiology, there are only limited data in this area. The purpose of the present study was to establish the possible regulation that AHR might undergo in ovarian cells. Here we show that the hormones FSH and estradiol are able to reduce AHR protein and transcript levels in granulosa cells in a way that parallels the changes observed in ovarian tissue across the rat estrous cycle. These findings suggest that estradiol and FSH would be cycle-associated endogenous modulators of AHR expression. In addition, we show that in granulosa cells the receptor is rapidly downregulated via proteasomal degradation following treatment with AHR ligands. However, prolonged treatment with an agonist caused an increase in Ahr mRNA levels. These actions would constitute a regulatory mechanism that both attenuates AHR signal rapidly and replenishes the cellular receptor pool in the long term. In conclusion, our results indicate that AHR expression is regulated by classical hormones and by its own ligands in granulosa cells. © 2006 by the Society for the Study of Reproduction, Inc.

Descripción: In the moth, Agrotis ipsilon, newly mated males cease to be attracted to the female-produced sex pheromone, preventing them from re-mating until the next night, by which time they would have refilled their reproductive glands for a potential new ejaculate. The behavioural plasticity is accompanied by a decrease in neuron sensitivity within the primary olfactory centre, the antennal lobe (AL). However, it was not clear whether the lack of the sexually guided behaviour results from the absence of sex pheromone detection in the ALs, or if they ignore it in spite of detection, or if the sex pheromone itself inhibits attraction behaviour after mating. To test these hypotheses, we performed behavioural tests and intracellular recordings of AL neurons to non-pheromonal odours (flower volatiles), different doses of sex pheromone and their mixtures in virgin and newly mated males. Our results show that, although the behavioural and AL neuron responses to flower volatiles alone were similar between virgin and mated males, the behavioural response of mated males to flower odours was inhibited by adding pheromone doses above the detection threshold of central neurons. Moreover, we show that the sex pheromone becomes inhibitory by differential central processing: below a specific threshold, it is not detected within the AL; above this threshold, it becomes inhibitory, preventing newly mated males from responding even to plant odours. Mated male moths have thus evolved a strategy based on transient odour-selective central processing, which allows them to avoid the risk-taking, energy-consuming search for females and delay re-mating until the next night for a potential new ejaculate. © 2010. Descripción: Modulation of sensitivity to sensory cues by experience is essential for animals to adapt to a changing environment. Sensitization and adaptation to signals of the same modality as a function of experience have been shown in many cases, and some of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these processes have been described. However, the influence of sensory signals on the sensitivity of a different modality is largely unknown. In males of the noctuid moth, Spodoptera littoralis, the sensitivity to the female-produced sex pheromone increases 24 h after a brief preexposure with pheromone at the behavioral and central nervous level. Here we show that this effect is not confined to the same sensory modality: the sensitivity of olfactory neurons can also be modulated by exposure to a different sensory stimulus, i.e., a pulsed stimulus mimicking echolocating sounds from attacking insectivorous bats. We tested responses of preexposed male moths in a walking bioassay and recorded from neurons in the primary olfactory center, the antennal lobe. We show that brief exposure to a bat call, but not to a behaviorally irrelevant tone, increases the behavioral sensitivity of male moths to sex pheromone 24 h later in the same way as exposure to the sex pheromone itself. The observed behavioral modification is accompanied by an increase in the sensitivity of olfactory neurons in the antennal lobe. Our data provide thus evidence for cross-modal experience-dependent plasticity not only on the behavioral level, but also on the central nervous level, in an insect.

Descripción: 1. 1. The present work undertakes a comparative study on the hexachlorobenzene (HCB) porphyria induction in female rats of Wistar and CHBBTHOM strains. The purpose was to characterize the CHBBTHOM strain with respect to the haem metabolic pathway, its regulatory mechanisms and its response to foreign drugs. 2. 2. After 7 weeks of treatment it was observed that the hepatic porphyrins increased 140 times, ALA-synthase 4 times and PCL was 73% inhibited in the Wistar strain. 3. 3. On the other hand the animals of CHBBTHOM strain showed lesser alteration on these parameters; hepatic porphyrins increased only 3-fold, ALA-synthase 1.7-fold and PCL was only 22% inhibited. 4. 4. Total iron liver content was nearly equal in both strains of rats. 5. 5. The results obtained would indicate that the lower susceptibility of the CHBBTHOM strain to acquire porphyria does not seem to be due to either: (1) congenital alterations of any parameters of the haem metabolic pathway, since the behaviour of normal animals from both strains was similar; or (2) a lower hepatic iron content in such animals. 6. 6. These findings would suggest that the differential response to HCB to this strain would be looked for in another metabolic pathway, such as that involved in the metabolization process of the toxic. © 1989.

Descripción: In previous papers we found that the frequency of B chromosomes in native races of maize varies considerably in different populations. Moreover, we found genotypes that control high and low transmission rates (TR) of B chromosomes in the Pisingallo race. In the present work crosses were made to determine whether the genes controlling B-TR are located on the normal chromosome set (As) or on the B chromosomes (Bs). We made female f.0B x male m.2B crosses between and within high (H) and low (L) B-TR groups. The Bs were transmitted on the male side in all cases. The mean B-TR from the progeny of f.0B (H) x m.2B (H) and f.0B (H) x m.2B (L) crosses was significantly higher than that from f.0B (L) x m.2B (L) and f.0B (L) x m.2B (H) crosses. The results show that the B-TR of the crosses corresponds to the H or L B-TR of the 0B female parents irrespective of the Bs of the male parent. This indicates that B-TR is genetically controlled by the 0B female parent and that these genes are located on the A chromosomes.

Descripción: When Ca2+ is released from internal stores in living cells, the resulting wave of increased concentration can travel without deformation (continuous propagation) or with burst-like behavior (saltatory propagation). We analyze the 'fire-diffuse-fire' model in order to illuminate the differences between these two modes of propagation. We show that the Ca2+ release wave in immature Xenopus oocytes and cardiac myocytes is saltatory, whereas the fertilization wave in the mature oocyte is continuous.

Descripción: A new species of Coulmannia, C. rossensis, is described from the Ross Sea, Antarctica. It is most similar to C. ramosae Castelló, 2004, but can easily be distinguished from this species by the males yielding a pair of granulate humps on the dorsum of the pereonites 1-6 and a single granulate hump on the pereonite 7 and the free pleonite. Coulmannia rossensis sp. n. is sexually dimorphic. Th e dorsal sculpture of the female bodies yield a single granulate hump on all the pereonites and free pleonite. Th e species of the genus Coulmannia are restricted to the Southern Ocean, and C. rossensis sp. n. is the fourth species included in it. © M. Choudhury et al.

Descripción: Size distribution, sex ratio and use of burrows of the burrowing toad Rhinella fernandezae were studied in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Two sites separated by approximately 300 m were studied: one was a road next to a swamp, and the other a garden of a country house located further from the swamp. We identified toad burrows, and individuals were sexed, measured and given an individual mark. Burrows were examined in subsequent months after the first sampling to assess the presence of toads. We found significant differences in the size distribution between areas, being the proportion of juveniles greater at the site next to the swamp where the reproduction of the species was observed. This result may suggest that the site located near to the swamp functions as a source habitat of individuals that migrate to the other site, where recruitment would be very scarce. Sex proportion of adults did not differ from 1:1 in neither the total population nor in each site, suggesting that there was not differential mortality by sex. Some toads changed burrows throughout the study period, but there were not differences in the frequency of change between adults and juveniles.

Descripción: The factors affecting the sexual behaviour of Panstrongylus megistus were studied under laboratory conditions. A general description of mating behaviour is presented for this species. The effect of the time elapsed after the first imaginal feeding on the mating frequency, the motivation of males to mate and the rejection behaviour by females, were analyzed. We also determined the number of copulas accepted by females of this species. Finally, the possible existence of a sexual chemical signal promoting male aggregation around mating couples was evaluated. Results showed that mating frequency increased with the time elapsed since the first adult meal. Despite the number of male copulatory attempts did not change as a function of time, the rejection behaviour of females became gradually less frequent. Females rejected mating by means of body flattening on the substrate, abdominal movements, evasion or stridulation. After a single copula, females did not usually accept to mate again. Neither male nor female aggregation around mating couples was observed, suggesting the absence of a sexual assembling pheromone in P. megistus.

Descripción: Previous studies of musical creativity suggest that this process involves multi-regional intra and interhemispheric interactions, particularly in the prefrontal cortex. However, the activity of the prefrontal cortex and that of the parieto-temporal regions, seems to depend on the domains of creativity that are evaluated and the task that is performed. In the field of music, only few studies have investigated the brain process of a creative task and none of them have investigated the effect of the level of creativity on the recruit networks. In this work we used magnetic resonance imaging to explore these issues by comparing the brain activities of subjects with higher creative abilities to those with lesser abilities, while the subjects improvised on different rhythmic fragments. We evaluated the products the subjects created during the fMRI scan using two musical parameters: fluidity and flexibility, and classified the subjects according to their punctuation. We examined the relation between brain activity and creativity level. Subjects with higher abilities generated their own creations based on modifications of the original rhythm with little adhesion to it. They showed activation in prefrontal regions of both hemispheres and the right insula. Subjects with lower abilities made only partial changes to the original musical patterns. In these subjects, activation was only observed in left unimodal areas. We demonstrated that the activations of prefrontal and paralimbic areas, such as the insula, are related to creativity level, which is related to a widespread integration of networks that are mainly associated with cognitive, motivational and emotional processes. © 2013 Villarreal et al.

Descripción: Hamilton & Orians (1965) stated that the non-parasitic ancestor of cowbirds accelerated its incubation period and nestling growth. Later, by comparing cowbirds with nesting birds, it was suggested that those characteristics, together with small eggs with thicker eggshell, were adaptations. When these hypotheses were tested considering the characteristics of the group in which cowbirds evolved, i.e. the "grackles and allies", it was found that only the thicker eggshell was a plausible adaptation. Moreover, nesting grackles and allies showed the same reproductive patterns as cowbirds (shorter incubation periods, faster nestling growth, and smaller eggs than those predicted by general allometric equations). In the present study, we tested whether small eggs with short incubation periods and nestlings with accelerated growth evolved in the ancestor of grackles and allies. For all the traits tested, we reconstructed ancestral states and built prediction intervals generated with independent variables that were allometrically related to them. Except for accelerated growth, we applied two evolutionary models incorporating outgroups in three steps. We found that the short incubation period and the faster nestling growth never evolved in the ancestor of grackles and allies. In most ancestor reconstructions, neither egg mass nor female body mass changed. However, when it changed, it increased both egg and female masses. The prediction intervals indicated that those increases did not imply an allometric change in size. Consequently, neither a decrease in egg mass nor an acceleration in nestling development and incubation period are considered characteristics that predisposed cowbirds to become brood parasites. © The Neotropical Ornithological Society.
