Descripción: According to the global predictions by the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), the sea-level rise due to ocean thermal expansion and glacier mass loss will average 0.09 - 0.88 m between 1990 and 2100, with a trend toward an increasing rise rate. Potential impacts of this increasing rise rate relate to changes in the coastal area, including floods, increased coastal retreat, and saline intrusion in the coastal acquiferous and estuaries. In order to achieve an appropriate coastal management scheme in the Province of Río Negro, the area was divided into zones to show information of the level of hazard on a simple map. To identify areas of geological hazard related to permanent and/ or episodic floods, a database was prepared. The threatened or in-danger areas were identified by means of coastal vulnerability indices, also called susceptibility indices, which were calculated by means of an algorithm that relates different variables obtained from coastal geology, and oceanographic and climatological information. This index is defined by seven variables and can be used to identify areas in risk of erosion or permanent/temporary flood. The most vulnerable areas to sea level rise are Balneario El Salado (Playas Doradas), San Antonio Oeste - San Antonio Este, Caleta de los Loros, and the Río Negro mouth. By contrast, vulnerability of the coastal area located to the south of Punta Pórfido is low. © 2004 Asociación Geológica Argentina.

Descripción: The relationship between annual rainfall totals and gauge elevation over Great Britain is re-examined using the recently developed technique of geographically weighted regression (GWR). This enables the spatial drift of regression parameters to be identified, estimated and mapped. It is shown that the rate of increase of precipitation with height, or height coefficient, varies from around 4.5 mm/m in the northwest to almost zero in the southeast. There is a particularly rapid change in this value across the English Midlands. The predicted sea level precipitation varies from 1250 mm to less than 600 mm in much the same way. Descripción: The study of the carbonate-ramp deposits of La Manga Formation has allowed us to recognize three facies associations. The lithofacies association A is composed by five lithofacies (A1-A5). This association represents part of the transgressive systems tract. It corresponds to external ramp deposits, accumulated below the storm-wave base. The A facies association appears in cycles of centimetric to decimetric thickness and belong to a retrograding parasequence set of 5th order. The lithofacies B association starts after an abrupt facies contact. It is characterized by six lithofacies (B1-B6). They are coarsening upward beds that form metric-scale cycles. These are interpreted as middle-ramp deposits dominated by storms. It corresponds to 4th order sequences. The lithofacies C includes three lithofacies (C1-C3). The small scale cycles were controlled by storm events, while the medium and large scale ones were likely originated by eustasy. The studied stratigraphic sections of La Manga Formation are included in two depostitional sequences SD-2 and SD-3. An abrupt discontinuity marks the beginning of the depositional sequence SD-2, which constitutes a transgressive system-tract, composed by a coarsening upward parasequence stacking set. Above a maximum flooding surface, manifested by a drastic change of facies, a low rate accommodation space period and a sea-level fall (characterized by a lowstand systems tract) are evidenced. The third depositional sequence SD-3 is composed by lagoon deposits. It starts after a paleokarstic surface, characterized by the development of a sheet-cake breccia and an intense vadose diagenesis.

Descripción: This work presents results, over the South American region, from the CSIRO Division of Atmospheric Research limited area model (DARLAM) and from the ninelevel general circulation model (GCM) of CSIRO (CSIRO Mk 2), within which it was nested in a one-way mode. Ten separate 30-day DARLAM simulations were performed for both January and July with a resolution of 125 km and were averaged to obtain a climatology for those months. This paper presents for the first time simulations of the January South American climate using a limited area model; previous similar studies simulated only the July climate. The goal of this study was to examine the capability of the CSIRO Mk 2 - DARLAM nested modeling system for simulating the climate in the South American region. Further, it was desired to investigate whether the higher resolution of DARLAM improves the simulated climate over various subregions, compared with the GCM and observations. With this purpose, a representative set of variables was analyzed and statistically compared. Overall, the fields simulated by the nesting system provide a better representation of the South American climate than the GCM. In particular, significant improvements are found in the nested model climatology for near-surface temperature and mean sea level pressure. Comparison of the January and July simulations shows a better wintertime performance. Some significant summertime features, like the Bolivian High, are reasonably well simulated by DARLAM, but not by the GCM. Copyright 2002 by the American Geophysical Union.
