Descripción: A regression approach was used to quantitatively estimate the attribution of the notable growth in the river flows of the Plata Basin during 1960-1999. The study was conducted in seven large basins that account for most of the Plata River discharge. Annual rainfall integrated over each basin and annual river flows at their closing points were used for the analysis. The contribution of rainfall changes during each of the three phases of El Niño-Southern Oscillation to total rainfall change in these basins was also calculated. The two main drivers for the generalized growth of the river flows were the increased precipitation and the decreased evaporation attributable to land use change, including deforestation of natural forest and crop switch from sugarcane and coffee trees to soybean. Other evaporation changes played a minor role. There was a north-south gradient in the respective importance of each driver, with land use change having greater weight in the northern basins and the precipitation increase in the southern ones. Thus, in the northern part of the Upper Paraná Basdespite the negative trend in precipitation there was a strong augment of the river flow caused by land use change. The contribution to the positive trend of the stream flows in the middle of the Plata Basin came from both land use change and increased precipitation. Finally, in the south, the Uruguay River flow change was basically due to the precipitation trend that was not only observed during the El Niño phase, but also during the Neutral phase. Only in the Middle Paraguay Basin was the shift to more frequent and intense El Niño events that took place in the 1970s an important factor in the contribution of precipitation to streamflow trends. © 2010 Royal Meteorological Society.

Descripción: The phytoplankton structure along the mainstem of the Lower Salado River (Argentina) was analysed in relation to the environmental variables and the influence exerted by the inflowing waters from the Paraná River (via El Vado Stream) and an adjacent floodplain shallow lake, between December 2003 and August 2004. Phytoplankton driving forces were explored using a functional approach. Small phytoplanktonic organisms with high metabolism and well adapted to live in mixed environments dominated (functional groups C, D, X1, X2), but the organic enrichment and slow flow also facilitated the thriving of Cyanobacteria (LO and minor contributions of H1, K, SN) and large Euglenophyta (W1, W2) inflowing from adjacent sites. The longitudinal and temporal changes in the phytoplankton structure depended on the prevailing hydrological conditions. Three scenarios were identified as regards the complex hydrological interactions of the Paraná and Salado Rivers: (i) the hydrological isolation period (low waters) when the Salado had a homogeneous longitudinal pattern and high phytoplankton development; (ii) the period of hydrological interactions with Salado River influence (high waters) when the homogeneous longitudinal pattern extended to the stream, and algal growth in the river was counteracted by dilution and enhancement of water velocity, and (iii) the period of hydrological interactions with Paraná System influence characterised by a longitudinal discontinuity with lower phytoplankton concentrations downriver the Paraná inflow due to dilution. There were no evidences that the lake contributed with algal biomass to the downriver plankton during the study period. © 2012 Elsevier GmbH.

Descripción: Many grasshopper species are considered of agronomical importance because they cause damage to pastures and crops. Comprehension of pest population dynamics requires a clear understanding of the genetic diversity and spatial structure of populations. In this study we report on patterns of genetic variation in the South American grasshopper Dichroplus elongatus which is an agricultural pest of crops and forage grasses of great economic significance in Argentina. We use Direct Amplification of Minisatellite Regions (DAMD) and partial sequences of the cytochrome oxydase 1 (COI) mitochondrial gene to investigate intraspecific structure, demographic history and gene flow patterns in twenty Argentinean populations of this species belonging to different geographic and biogeographic regions. DAMD data suggest that, although genetic drift and migration occur within and between populations, measurable relatedness among neighbouring populations declines with distance and dispersal over distances greater than 200 km is not typical, whereas effective gene flow may occur for populations separated by less than 100 km. Landscape analysis was useful to detect genetic discontinuities associated with environmental heterogeneity reflecting the changing agroecosystem. The COI results indicate the existence of strong genetic differentiation between two groups of populations located at both margins of the Paraná River which became separated during climate oscillations of the Middle Pleistocene, suggesting a significant restriction in effective dispersion mediated by females and large scale geographic differentiation. The number of migrants between populations estimated through mitochondrial and DAMD markers suggest that gene flow is low prompting a non-homogeneous spatial structure and justifying the variation through space. Moreover, the genetic analysis of both markers allows us to conclude that males appear to disperse more than females, reducing the chance of the genetic loss associated with recent anthropogenic fragmentation of the D. elongatus studied range. © 2012 Rosetti, Remis.

Descripción: In the region of the Main Andes of San Juan, exists a high concentration of landslide deposits that can originate natural dams. The outburst of these dams generated by slide is a common process in this morphology. The analyses of satellite imagery and air photos of previous years allow reconstructing the characteristics and the origin of the slides that formed those natural dams. In this region of the Main Andes, the rapid uplift and erosion of the mountain chain has created abrupt slopes and an internal structure in the materials that determined an increase of the susceptibility to the slope collapse without triggers as the seismic activity or precipitations. The objectives of the present work are (1) to analyze the causes that formed the natural dam and produced the landslide dam and development of the Los Erizos lagoon in the middle course of the Santa Cruz river; (2) the outburst of the dam and their consequent flood; and (3) the morphologic characteristic of the study region. The temporary comparison between air photos with satellite imageries indicates that the natural dam was generated by slip of the western hillside of the Santa Cruz mountain range, located below the Cerro Estrella. However, the constant water flow to the lagoon, has increased its water level until reaching the maximum benchmark of the dam, produced the beginning of the lake drainage and weakening of the dam causing the outburst and its consequent flood. Based on satellite imagery, a temporary analysis of the lagoon is presented, indicating that monitoring is an important tool to alert in the whole San Juan river basin for possible natural dikes, preventing hazards to the populations down water. The alluvium of November 12 of 2005, discharged 32.100.000 m3 in 67 minutes and traveled 254 km in less than 12 hours.

Descripción: Large landslides of different types not previously recorded are located in the left bank of the Río Curri Leuvú valley, north of the Tricao Malal village. There are situated among the Cerro Palao and the Palao pond and Riscos Negros site to the north. The largest landslides (Malal Cura and Arroyo Mogolillo landslides) correspond to the multiple rotational progressive type. They are developed on Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, covered by Cenozoic basalt flows. The debris and earth flows are developed in areas covered by the volcanic rocks of the Charilehue Formation (Middle Miocene) and continue north of study reaching the latitudes of the Grande and Medio streams and also the Colimamil stream valley southeast of Cerro Domuyo. The impact of these phenomena in the fluvial system was important and produced ephemeral and permanent blocking as seen in the La Turbia stream with coeval ponding. It is hypothesized that the landslide occurrence is related to excess or long-lasting periods of rain in postglacial times. It is also indicated the presence of rock glaciers in the Cerro Palao.

Descripción: The inability to monitor wetland drag coefficients at a regional scale is rooted in the difficulty to determine vegetation structure from remote sensing data. Based on the fact that the backscattering coefficient is sensitive to marsh vegetation structure, this paper presents a methodology to estimate the drag coefficient from a combination of SAR images, interaction models and ancillary data. We use as test case a severe fire event occurred in the Paraná River Delta (Argentina) at the beginning of 2008, when 10% of the herbaceous vegetation was burned up. Descripción: This paper deals with the sedimentological characteristics of piedmont deposits exposed in intramontane basins of the Precordillera. Detailed studies carried out along the upper Jáchal river and in the Gualilán area allowed identifying and characterizing six major types of piedmont accumulations: 1) talus, 2) colluvial fans dominated by gravity flows, 3) colluvial fans dominated by fluid flows, 4) collector-conoid fluvial system, 5) piedmonts dominated by channalized flows and 6) alluvial fans. The talus deposits are characterized by the dominance of clast-supported breccias (bearing minimum matrix amounts) that commonly exhibit massive bedding, planar or high angle imbricated clasts fabric. Colluvial fans dominated by gravity flows are formed by massive matrix-supported breccias with minor percentages of clast-supported breccias. On the contrary, colluvial fans dominated by fluid flows are composed of amalgamated channels infilled by both clast- and matrix-supported breccias together with intercalation of graded breccias. Accumulations of the collector-conoid fluvial systems are the most diverse in composition, including from massive matrix-supported breccias to cross-bedded conglomerates and scarce mudstones. In relation to the piedmont dominated by channalized flows, they comprise massive clast-supported breccias and less amounts of imbricated or cross-bedded ones. The alluvial fan deposits are mostly composed of cross-bedded clast-supported conglomerates, though matrix-supported conglomerates and breccias also appear as proximal deposits. Different from the previously mentioned deposits, the clast of alluvial fan accumulations shows more varied lithologic composition. The comparative analysis of the piedmonts found in the studied valleys permits to propone a conceptual model for classification of piedmont, on the basis of the extension of the basins and vertical space of accommodation.

Descripción: The lower section of Canadon Asfalto Formation (Callovian-Oxfordian) is located at Las Chacritas, Cerro Condor area, on the middle course of Chubut River. It is represented by lacustrine carbonate faciès with interbedded volcanic layers accumulated in the rift system of the Somuncura-Canadon Asfalto Basin. Eight microfacies (MF), defining the lake environments, and three biohermal faciès (MFB) corresponding to an extensive microbialitic belt overlying eulittoral sediments have been recognized: The microfacies are: MF1, mudstone with microbial lamination, related to supralittoral shallow ponds; MF2, biohermal intraclastic floatstone linked to storm episodes; culminating with evaporitic levels; MF3, mudstone with evidence of dessication formed in stagnant water; MF4, microbial-peloidal mudstone/wackestone with evidence of sporadic wave currents, in a eulittoral environment; MF5, intraclastic grainstone/rudstone with pedogenic alterations showing evidence of wave action in a eulittoral area; MF6, oncoidal floatstone interpreted as an hiperconcentrated flow; MF7: Bio-intra-siliciclastic packstone/wackestone accumulated in infralittoral conditions and MF8, silicified bulbous stromatolites related to the outlet of fluvial channels. The biohermal faciès are: MFB9, mudstone with stromatolites and wackestone levels; MFB10, planar stromatolites and MFB11, hemispherical stromatolites with chalk crust. Behind the biohermal belt, palustrine limestones locally show layers with episodic storm floods. The microfacial and facial distribution represents expansion and contraction cycles of a closed lake, controlled mainly by the precipitations. ©1999 Asociacián Gcológica Argentina.
