Descripción: We examine the decomposition of forced Taylor-Green and Arn'old-Beltrami-Childress (ABC) flows into coherent and incoherent components using an orthonormal wavelet decomposition. We ask whether wavelet coefficient thresholding based on the Donoho-Johnstone criterion can extract a coherent vortex signal while leaving behind Gaussian random noise. We find that no threshold yields a strictly Gaussian incoherent component, and that the most Gaussian incoherent flow is found for data compression lower than that achieved with the fully iterated Donoho-Johnstone threshold. Moreover, even at such low compression, the incoherent component shows clear signs of large-scale spatial correlations that are signatures of the forcings used to drive the flows. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: We applied a methodology capable of resolving the optical rotatory power into atomic contributions. The individual atomic contributions to the optical rotatory power and molecular chirality of the methylhydroperoxide are obtained via a canonical transformation of the Hamiltonian by which the electric dipolar moment operator is transformed to the acceleration gauge formalism and the magnetic dipolar moment operator to the torque formalism. The gross atomic isotropic contributions have been evaluated for the carbon, the nonequivalent oxygen, and the nonequivalent hydrogen atoms of methylhydroperoxide, employing a very large Gaussian basis set which is close to the Hartree-Fock limit. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: The formation of coherent structures in turbulence is a signature of a developing cascade and therefore might be observable by analyzing inner heliospheric solar wind turbulence. To test this idea, data from the Helios 2 mission, for six streams of solar wind at different heliocentric distances and of different velocities, were subjected to statistical analysis using the partial variance of increments (PVI) approach. We see a clear increase of the PVI distribution function versus solar wind age for higher PVI cutoff, indicating development of non-Gaussian coherent structures. The plausibility of this interpretation is confirmed by a similar behavior observed in two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics simulation data at corresponding dimensionless nonlinear times. © 2012. Descripción: In this work we analytically evaluate, for the first time, the exact canonical partition function for two interacting spherical particles into a spherical pore. The interaction with the spherical substrate and between particles is described by an attractive square-well and a square-shoulder potential. In addition, we obtain exact expressions for both the one particle and an averaged two particle density distribution. We develop a thermodynamic approach to few-body systems by introducing a method based on thermodynamic measures [I. Urrutia, J. Chem. Phys. 134, 104503 (2010)] for nonhard interaction potentials. This analysis enables us to obtain expressions for the pressure, the surface tension, and the equivalent magnitudes for the total and Gaussian curvatures. As a by-product, we solve systems composed of two particles outside a fixed spherical obstacle. We study the low density limit for a many-body system confined to a spherical cavity and a many-body system surrounding a spherical obstacle. From this analysis we derive the exact first order dependence of the surface tension and Tolman length. Our findings show that the Tolman length goes to zero in the case of a purely hard wall spherical substrate, but contains a zero order term in density for square-well and square-shoulder wall-fluid potentials. This suggests that any nonhard wall-fluid potential should produce a non-null zero order term in the Tolman length. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are dificult to segment due to their characteristic noise, called speckle, which is multiplicative, non-gaussian and has a low signal to noise ratio. In this work we use the GH distribution to model the SAR data from the different regions of the image. We estimate their statistical parameters and use them in a segmentation algorithm based on multiregion competition. We then apply this algorithm to segment simulated as well as real SAR images and evaluate the accuracy of the segmentation results obtained. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
