Descripción: Correlation anisotropy emerges dynamically in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), producing stronger gradients across the large-scale mean magnetic field than along it. This occurs both globally and locally, and has significant implications in space and astrophysical plasmas, including particle scattering and transport, and theories of turbulence. Properties of local correlation anisotropy are further documented here by showing through numerical experiments that the effect is intensified in more localized estimates of the mean field. The mathematical formulation of this property shows that local anisotropy mixes second-order with higher order correlations. Sensitivity of local statistical estimates to higher order correlations can be understood in connection with the stochastic coordinate system inherent in such formulations. We demonstrate this in specific cases, and illustrate the connection to higher order statistics by showing the sensitivity of local anisotropy to phase randomization, after which the global measure of anisotropy is recovered at all scales of averaging. This establishes that anisotropy of the local structure function is not a measure of anisotropy of the energy spectrum. Evidently, the local enhancement of correlation anisotropy is of substantial fundamental interest and must be understood in terms of higher order correlations, specifically fourth-order and above. © 2012. Descripción: We consider the transverse-momentum (qT) distribution of Higgs bosons produced at hadron colliders. We use a formalism that uniformly treats both the small-qT and large-qT regions in QCD perturbation theory. At small qT (qT ≪ MH, MH being the mass of the Higgs boson), we implement an all-order resummation of logarithmically-enhanced contributions up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. At large qT (qT ≳ MH), we use fixed-order perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order. The resummed and fixed-order approaches are consistently matched by avoiding double-counting in the intermediate-qT region. In this region, the introduction of unjustified higher-order terms is avoided by imposing unitarity constraints, so that the integral of the qT spectrum exactly reproduces the perturbative result for the total cross section up to next-to-next-to-leading order. Numerical results at the LHC are presented. These show that the main features of the qT distribution are quite stable with respect to perturbative QCD uncertainties. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Descripción: The stacking of positively charged (or doped) terthiophene oligomers and quaterthiophene polymers in solution is investigated applying a recently developed unified electrostatic and cavitation model for first-principles calculations in a continuum solvent. The thermodynamic and structural patterns of the dimerization are explored in different solvents, and the distinctive roles of polarity and surface tension are characterized and analyzed. Interestingly, we discover a saturation in the stabilization effect of the dielectric screening that takes place at rather small values of ε0. Moreover, we address the interactions in trimers of terthiophene cations, with the aim of generalizing the results obtained for the dimers to the case of higher-order stacks and nanoaggregates. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: A method is developed to solve Laplace's equation with Dirichlet's or Neumann's conditions in plane, single-connected regions bounded by arbitrary single curves. It is based on the existence of a conformal transformation that reduces the original problem to another whose solution is known. The main advantage of the method is that it does not require the knowledge of the transformation itself, so it is applicable even when no transformation is available. Descripción: We have measured the specific heat at constant pressure, Cp, of three different samples of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNT). For all samples, Cp departs from a graphitic behavior at T < 120 K. Cp measurements show a temperature threshold from a linear regime for intermediate temperature to a higher-order power law for low temperatures. Moreover, it was found that this crossover only depends on the internal structure of the individual MWNT and not on the spatial order of the MWNT within a bundle. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Descripción: The noncovalent complex formed by the association of two fragments of chymotrypsin inhibitor-2 is reversibly denatured by pressure in the absence of chemical denaturants. On pressure release, the complex returned to its original conformation through a biphasic reaction, with first-order rate constants of 0.012 and 0.002 s-1, respectively. The slowest phase arises from an interconversion of the pressure-denatured state, as revealed by double pressure-jump experiments. Below 5 μM, the process was concentration dependent with a second-order rate constant of 1,700 s-1 M-1. Fragment association at atmospheric pressure showed a similar break in the order of the reaction above 5 μM, but both first- and second-order folding/association rates are 2.5 times faster than those for the refolding of the pressure-denatured state. Although the folding rates of the intact protein and the association of the fragments displayed nonlinear Eyring behavior for the temperature dependence, refolding of the pressure-denatured complex showed a linear response. The negligible heat capacity of activation reflects a balance of minimal change in the burial of residues from the pressure-denatured state to the transition state. If we add the higher energy barrier in the refolding of the pressure-denatured state, the rate differences must lie in the structure of this state, which has to undergo a structural rearrangement. This clearly differs from the conformational flexibility of the isolated fragments or the largely unfolded denatured state of the intact protein in acid and provides insight into denatured states of proteins under folding conditions.

Descripción: We compared several attributes of vegetation structure of the understory and of bird species richness, guild abundance, and total abundance between a 200-ha area of semiarid Chacoan forest and another 200-ha area of the same forest where shrubs were manually removed, in Santiago del Estero province, Argentina. We seasonally recorded birds at 60 point count stations (30 in each type of habitat) between March 1998 and August 1999. The shrubless area showed higher percentages of herb cover and bare ground than the forest, whereas in the forest there were higher covers of litter and shrubs and a higher shrub height than in the shrubless area. Moreover, the shrubless area showed a lower species richness and bird abundance than the forest in summer. At the guild level, analyses revealed that bark insectivores were more abundant in the shrubless area, whereas foliage insectivores, terrestrial insectivores, and arboreal seed eaters were more abundant in the forest. Our results show that shrub removal has a great influence on the structure of bird assemblages, which persists several years later after the application of this technique. We recommend that, in case of massive shrub removal, stripes of shrubby vegetation should be maintained in order to guarantee the inclusion of shrub-associated bird species in the mosaic landscape. © The Neotropical Ornithological Society.

Descripción: Most insects' assemblages differ with forest type and show vertical stratification. We tested for differences in richness, abundance and composition of hymenopteran families and mymarid genera between sugar maple (Acer saccharum) and white pine (Pinus strobus) stands and between canopy and understory in northeastern temperate forests in Canada. We used flight interception traps (modified malaise traps) suspended in the canopy and the understory in a split-split block design, with forest type as the main factor, forest stratum as the first split factor, and collection bottle location as the second split factor. Hymenopteran families and mymarid genera differed in their diversity depending on forest type and stratum. Both family and genera richness were higher in maple than in pine forests, whereas family richness was higher in the canopy and top bottles and generic richness was higher in the understory and bottom bottles. Multivariate analysis separated samples by forest type, vegetation stratum, and bottle location. Family composition showed 77% similarity between forest types and 73% between the canopy and understory. At the lower taxa level, mymarid genera showed only 47% similarity between forest types and 40% between forest strata, indicating vertical stratification and relatively high β-diversity. Our study suggests that hymenopteran diversity and composition is strongly dependent on forest type and structure, making flying members of this order particularly vulnerable to forest management practices. It also shows that insect assemblage composition (especially at low-taxon levels), rather than relative abundance and richness, is the community attribute most sensitive to forest type and vertical stratification. © 2007 Entomological Society of America.

Descripción: 2-Cys peroxiredoxins (2-Cys Prxs) are ubiquitous peroxidases with important roles in cellular antioxidant defense and hydrogen peroxide-mediated signaling. Post-translational modifications of conserved cysteines cause the transition from low to high molecular weight oligomers, triggering the functional change from peroxidase to molecular chaperone. However, it remains unclear how non-covalent interactions of 2-Cys Prx with metabolites modulate the quaternary structure. Here, we disclose that ATP and Mg2+ (ATP/Mg) promote the self-polymerization of chloroplast 2-Cys Prx (polypeptide 23.5 kDa) into soluble higher order assemblies (>2 MDa) that proceed to insoluble aggregates beyond 5mMATP. Remarkably, the withdrawal of ATP or Mg2+ brings soluble oligomers and insoluble aggregates back to the native conformation without compromising the associated functions. As confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, ATP/Mg drive the toroid-like decamers (diameter 13 nm) to the formation of large sphere-like particles (diameter ∼30 nm). Circular dichroism studies on ATP-labeled 2-Cys Prx reveal that ATP/Mg enhance the proportion of β-sheets with the concurrent decrease in the content of α-helices. In line with this observation, the formation of insoluble aggregates is strongly prevented by 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol, a cosolvent employed to induce α-helical conformations. We further find that the response of self-polymerization to ATP/Mg departs abruptly from that of the associated peroxidase and chaperone activities when two highly conserved residues, Arg129 and Arg152, are mutated. Collectively, our data uncover that non-covalent interactions of ATP/Mg with 2-Cys Prx modulate dynamically the quaternary structure, thereby coupling the non-redox chemistry of cell energy with redox transformations at cysteine residues. © 2011 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.

Descripción: We studied hantavirus seroprevalence and virus variability in rodent populations in Diego Gaynor, northwest of Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Rodent samplings were conducted in railroads and cropfield borders in March and July 1999, September and December 2000, and March 2001. Antibody detection was performed by an enzyme link immunosorbent assay (ELISA), using the recombinant nucleoprotein of Andes (AND) virus as antigen. Tissue samples were taken from positive antibody individuals in order to confirm the presence of hantavirus genomic material and to identify virus genotypes. Akodon azarae was the most abundant species, followed by Oligoryzomys flavescens, while Calomys laucha and C. musculinus were rarely caught. We found a rate of seroprevalence of 9.3% for a total sample of 291 A. azarae and 13.5% for 37 O. flavescens. After molecular analyses of hantavirus, we confirmed the presence of hantavirus genomic material in 16 individuals with ELISA (+) results and two individuals with ELISA (-). Four amplimers for each species were sequenced and compared to the corresponding sequences of representative hantaviruses. We identified the AND Cent Lee from three O. flavescens, and the Pergamino virus from four A. azarae and from one O. flavescens. A. azarae males had higher seroprevalence than females, and heavier individuals showed higher seroprevalence than lighter ones. We did not find seroprevalence differences according to sex in O. flavescens, although this result may have been produced by the low sample size. The lowest seroprevalence was found in a period of high rodent density, when juveniles prevailed in the population. We found higher seroprevalences than those detected in previous studies for other localities of central Argentina where cases of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) have been reported. The presence of AND Cent Lee virus in rodent populations of the study area, which is responsible of HPS cases in central Argentina, suggests that human populations are at risk of HPS disease, although there were not reported cases of this disease until today.

Descripción: Energetics, structural features, polarity, and melting transitions in water clusters containing up to eight molecules were studied using ab initio methods and empirical force field models. Our quantum approach was based on density functional theory performed at the generalized gradient approximation level. For the specific case of (H2O)6, we selected five conformers of similar energy with different geometries and dipolar moments. For these cases, the cyclic arrangement was found to be the only nonpolar aggregate. For (H2O)8, the most stable structures corresponded to nonpolar, cubic-like, D2d and S4 conformers. Higher energy aggregates exhibit a large spectrum in their polarities. The static polarizability was found to be proportional to the size of the aggregates and presents a weak dependence with the number of hydrogen bonds. In order to examine the influence of thermal fluctuations on the aggregates, we have performed a series of classical molecular dynamics experiments from low temperature up to the melting transition using two different effective pseudopotentials: the TIP4P and MCY models. Minimum energy structures for both classical potentials were found to reproduce reasonably well the results obtained using ab initio methods. Isomerization and phase transitions were monitored by following changes in dipole moments, number of hydrogen bonds and Lindemann's parameter. For (H2O)6 and (H2O)8, the melting transitions were found at Tm≈50 and 160 K, respectively; for both aggregates, we observed premelting transitions between well differentiated conformers as well. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: Dichroplus pratensis has a complex system of Robertsonian rearrangements with central-marginal distribution; marginal populations are standard telocentric. Standard bivalents show a proximal-distal chiasma pattern in both sexes. In Robertsonian individuals a redistribution of chiasmata occurs: proximal chiasmata are suppressed in fusion trivalents and bivalents which usually display a single distal chiasma per chromosome arm. In this paper we studied the synaptic patterns of homologous chromosomes at prophase I of different Robertsonian status in order to find a mechanistic explanation for the observed phenomenon of redistribution of chiasmata. Synaptonemal complexes of males with different karyotypes were analysed by transmission electron microscopy in surface-spread preparations. The study of zygotene and early pachytene nuclei revealed that in the former, pericentromeric regions are the last to synapse in Robertsonian trivalents and bivalents and normally remain asynaptic at pachytene in the case of trivalents, but complete pairing in bivalents. Telocentric (standard) bivalents usually show complete synapsis at pachytene, but different degrees of interstitial asynapsis during zygotene, suggesting that synapsis starts in opposite (centromeric and distal) ends. The sequential nature of synapsis in the three types of configuration is directly related to their patterns of chiasma localisation at diplotene-metaphase I, and strongly supports our previous idea that Rb fusions instantly produce a redistribution of chiasmata towards chromosome ends by reducing the early pairing regions (which pair first, remain paired longer and thus would have a higher probability of forming chiasmata) from four to two (independently of the heterozygous or homozygous status of the fusion). Pericentrometric regions would pair the last, thus chiasma formation is strongly reduced in these areas contrary to what occurs in telocentric bivalents.

Descripción: The lung of the toad, Melanophryniscus stelzneri stelzneri was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In M.s.stelzneri the parenchyma forms a polygonal network arrangement, therefore the parenchyma is edicular. These spaces are delimited by the interconnection of third order septa which are covered by respiratory epithelium. Small patches of ciliated epithelium without goblet cells appear irregularly distributed on the septa. The respiratory epithelium consists of one type of pneumocyte, which shows characteristics of both type I and type II alveolar cells of higher vertebrates. The pneumocytes are irregular in shape and possess attenuated cytoplasmic processes, which spread around the capillaries to form the outer layer of the air-blood barrier. These cells contain different types of cytoplasmic bodies: electron dense bodies, multivesicular bodies and lamellar bodies. Dense bodies are probably the precursors of lamellar bodies and the multivesicular bodies are incorporated into the latter. Neuroepithelial bodies appear randomly distributed over the septa. These bodies are separated from the lumen of the lung by thin cytoplasmic processes of neighbouring pneumocytes. The air-blood barrier consists of three layers: epithelium, interstitial space and endothelium. The relatively simple pulmonary structure of M.s.stelzneri is due to a lower degree of partitioning of the pulmonary lumen in comparison to the lung of other bufonid anurans, could be correlated with a well developed cutaneous and buccopharingeal respiration. The testing of this hypothesis awaits further studies.

Descripción: In the right bank of the Arroyo Tapalqué (Salto de Piedra, Olavarría, Buenos Aires province) is a section through fluvial sediments of the Luján Formation (upper and lower members) and aeolian deposits of La Postrera Formation. A geological and geophysical study was carried out to determination the magnetic parameters of the sediments of both formations, in order to evaluate the environmental and climatic conditions at the time of deposition. Levels with high concentrations of ferromagnetic minerals are thought to be related to an increase in capacity of river transport probably due to higher rainfall. By contrast, a particular magnetic behaviour was detected in levels closely associated with pedogenetic processes (Suelo Puesto Callejón Viejo, SPCV, Suelo Puesto Berrondo, SPB and present soils). This behaviour is attributed to the partial dissolution of the ferromagnetic fraction (magnetic/titanomagnetite) and to possible formation of a high c oercitivity magnetic fraction (hematite?) as an associated process. These results are similar to those obtained for paleosols from the Buenos Aires Formation, probably because of parental material common to both. On the basis of present field and laboratory observations, together with previously available information, a detailed correlation is proposed between features observed in this section and palaeoclimatic fluctuations identified for Pleistocene/Holocene.

Descripción: A numerical study of the space-charge sheath adjacent to the nozzle wall of a cutting torch is presented. The hydrodynamic model corresponds to a collision-dominated sheath and does not assume cold ions, so drift-diffusion-type equations are used. Also an improved expression for the ion-neutral momentum transfer is employed rather than the usual constant ion-mean-free-path or constant ion collision frequency approximations. Assuming a constant electron temperature in the sheath and neglecting the electron inertial term, the continuity and momentum equations for ions and electrons, together with Poisson's equation, were solved for the electric potential, ion velocities (both normal and tangential components), and for the ion and electron densities. It was found that both the ion and electron densities present a sudden drop at the sheath-plasma edge. The ion density continues to decrease slowly inside the sheath, while the electron density presents a virtually zero value everywhere inside the sheath, the electron thermal conduction flux to the nozzle wall being negligible. These wall results thus become thermally isolated in spite of the high electron temperature in its adjacency. For a nozzle biasing voltage close to the gas breakdown, it was found that the electric field value is high, reaching a value of about 9× 106 V m-1 at the exit of the nozzle wall. This value is higher than the average field value across the sheath and is on the order of the breakdown threshold value. This means that an undesired sheath breakdown could occur at the vicinities of the nozzle exit even if the average electric field across the sheath is not strong enough. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: We determine how the differences in the treatment of the subfilter-scale physics affect the properties of the flow for three closely related regularizations of Navier-Stokes. The consequences on the applicability of the regularizations as subgrid-scale (SGS) models are also shown by examining their effects on superfilter-scale properties. Numerical solutions of the Clark-α model are compared to two previously employed regularizations, the Lagrangian-averaged Navier-Stokes α-model (LANS-α) and Leray-α, albeit at significantly higher Reynolds number than previous studies, namely, Re≈3300, Taylor Reynolds number of Re≈790, and to a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equations. We derive the de Kármán-Howarth equation for both the Clark-α and Leray-α models. We confirm one of two possible scalings resulting from this equation for Clark-α as well as its associated k-1 energy spectrum. At subfilter scales, Clark-α possesses similar total dissipation and characteristic time to reach a statistical turbulent steady state as Navier-Stokes, but exhibits greater intermittency. As a SGS model, Clark-α reproduces the large-scale energy spectrum and intermittency properties of the DNS. For the Leray-α model, increasing the filter width α decreases the nonlinearity and, hence, the effective Reynolds number is substantially decreased. Therefore, even for the smallest value of α studied Leray-α was inadequate as a SGS model. The LANS-α energy spectrum ∼k1, consistent with its so-called "rigid bodies," precludes a reproduction of the large-scale energy spectrum of the DNS at high Re while achieving a large reduction in numerical resolution. We find, however, that this same feature reduces its intermittency compared to Clark-α (which shares a similar de Kármán-Howarth equation). Clark-α is found to be the best approximation for reproducing the total dissipation rate and the energy spectrum at scales larger than α, whereas high-order intermittency properties for larger values of α are best reproduced by LANS-α. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: Chagas disease remains a serious obstacle to health and economic development in Latin America, especially for the rural poor. We report the long-term effects of interventions in rural villages in northern Argentina during 1984-2006. Two community-wide campaigns of residual insecticide spraying immediately and strongly reduced domestic infestation and infection with Trypanosoma cruzi in Triatoma infestans bugs and dogs and more gradually reduced the seroprevalence of children <15 years of age. Because no effective surveillance and control actions followed the first campaign in 1985, transmission resurged in 2-3 years. Renewed interventions in 1992 followed by sustained, supervised, community-based vector control largely suppressed the reestablishment of domestic bug colonies and finally led to the interruption of local human T. cruzi transmission. Human incidence of infection was nearly an order of magnitude higher in peripheral rural areas under pulsed, unsupervised, community-based interventions, where human transmission became apparent in 2000. The sustained, supervised, community-based strategy nearly interrupted domestic transmission to dogs but did not eliminate T. infestans despite the absence of pyrethroid-insecticide resistance. T. infestans persisted in part because of the lack of major changes in housing construction and quality. Sustained community participation grew out of establishing a trusted relationship with the affected communities and the local schools. Descripción: Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease contains a major cysteine proteinase, cruzipain (Cz), with an unusual carboxyl-terminal extension (C-T). We have previously reported the presence of sulfate groups in the N-linked oligosaccharide chains of this domain. In order to evaluate the immune responses to sulfated moieties on Cz, BALB/c mice were immunized with purified Cz and C-T prior and after desulfation treatment. The humoral immune response to sulfates on Cz or C-T was mainly IgG2b. Interestingly, the abolishment of IgG2b reactivity when desulfated antigens were used as immunogens demonstrates that esterified sulfate groups are absolutely required for eliciting IgG2b response to Cz. Sera from chronically T. cruzi -infected subjects with mild disease displayed higher levels of total IgG and IgG2 antibodies specific for sulfated epitopes compared with those in more severe forms of the disease. A significant reduction of C-T-specific delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction in C-T-immunized mice was observed when desulfated C-T was challenged, suggesting the involvement of sulfate groups in the generation of memory T-cell responses. Moreover, immunization with C-T in the absence of infection elicited ultrastructural abnormalities in heart tissue. Surprisingly, hearts from sulfate-depleted C-T-immunized mice did not present pathological alterations. This is the first report showing that sulfate-bearing glycoproteins from trypanosomatids are able to elicit specific humoral and cellular immune responses and appeared to be involved in the generation of heart tissue damage.
