Descripción: Stack filters are a special case of non-linear filters. They have a good performance for filtering images with different types of noise while preserving edges and details. A stack filter decomposes an input image into several binary images according to a set of thresholds. Each binary image is then filtered by a Boolean function, which characterizes the filter. Adaptive stack filters can be designed to be optimal; they are computed from a pair of images consisting of an ideal noiseless image and its noisy version. In this work we study the performance of adaptive stack filters when they are applied to Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. This is done by evaluating the quality of the filtered images through the use of suitable image quality indexes and by measuring the classification accuracy of the resulting images. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Descripción: A procedure for the construction of balanced orthogonal nonseparable quincunx multiwavelets, having filters with good lowpass properties, is introduced. The matrix filter bank is viewed as the polyphase matrix of other filters, upon which the lowpass condition is imposed. The multiscaling functions obtained are plotted by means of the cascade algorithm. The process of transforming an image with these wavelets is outlined: formulae for analysis and synthesis are given, the first steps are illustrated with images, and the decomposition of the original image into two input images is addressed. Compression is achieved in a nonlinear process. Experimental results show that (i) the constructed multiwavelets having lowpass properties perform better than other nonseparable multiwavelets, (ii) the energy compaction in the fine detail subbands is greater for the multiwavelets than for the one-dimensional wavelets tried.

Descripción: An experimental study of the plasma jet generated in a pulsed copper vacuum arc with an annular anode and operated with a linear magnetic filter is presented. Two types of filters were employed, one consisting of an insulating duct and the other of a conducting duct, both of them surrounded by an external coil, which generates the axial magnetic field. To improve the ion flux at the filter entrance another auxiliary magnetic field in the cathode region was applied (focusing field). Also, the cathode shape was modified to confine the cathode spot onto the front cathode surface. Operating the arc under vacuum conditions, probe measurements of the ion saturation current and the plasma potential at different axial positions along the ducts and for different filtering magnetic field values are reported. A comparison between both kinds of filters is also presented. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: Measurements of plasma velocities in a 30 A high energy density cutting torch are reported. The velocity diagnostic is based on the analysis of the light fluctuations emitted by the arc which are assumed to propagate with the flow velocity. These light fluctuations originate from plasma temperature and plasma density fluctuations mainly due to hydrodynamic instabilities. Fast photodiodes are employed as the light sensors. The arc core velocity was obtained from spectrally filtered light fluctuations measurements using a band-pass filter to detect light emission fluctuations emitted only from the arc axis. Maximum plasma jet velocities of 5000 m s -1 close to the nozzle exit and about 2000 m s -1 close to the anode were found. The obtained velocity values are in good agreement with those values predicted by a numerical code for a similar torch to that employed in this work. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: In the present work, we studied the efficiency of a magnetic island filter for two vacuum arc designs, pulsed and continuous. The magnetic island filter consisted in a straight duct with an external solenoid and a magnet enclosed in a housing (magnetic island) located inside the duct on its axis, and both magnetic fields are in opposite direction. The housing of the magnetic island obstructs the line of sight between the cathode and the substrate. In this arrangement, the charged plasma components move along the curved magnetic field lines, around the magnetic island, but the macroparticles move in straight paths and deposit on the wall of the magnetic island housing. The performance of the filter was characterized for different external and internal field strengths. The plasma transport efficiency was analyzed by measuring the ion saturation current with Langmuir probes and the deposited mass rate. The ion transmission efficiency around the system axis achieved values around 25%. Observation of the coating surface morphology with optical microscopy determined that the macroparticles were effectively removed.

Descripción: The subfilter-scale (SFS) physics of regularization models are investigated to understand the regularizations' performance as SFS models. Suppression of spectrally local SFS interactions and conservation of small-scale circulation in the Lagrangian-averaged Navier-Stokes α-model (LANS-α) is found to lead to the formation of rigid bodies. These contaminate the superfilter-scale energy spectrum with a scaling that approaches k +1 as the SFS spectra is resolved. The Clark-α and Leray-α models, truncations of LANS-α, do not conserve small-scale circulation and do not develop rigid bodies. LANS-α, however, is closest to Navier-Stokes in intermittency properties. All three models are found to be stable at high Reynolds number. Differences between L 2 and H 1 norm models are clarified. For magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), the presence of the Lorentz force as a source (or sink) for circulation and as a facilitator of both spectrally nonlocal large to small scale interactions as well as local SFS interactions prevents the formation of rigid bodies in Lagrangian-averaged MHD (LAMHD-α). LAMHD-α performs well as a predictor of superfilter-scale energy spectra and of intermittent current sheets at high Reynolds numbers. It may prove generally applicable as a MHD-LES. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Descripción: GPS radio occultation satellite data allowed to analyze in the last decade for the first time a large amount of atmospheric temperature profiles including both the troposphere and the stratosphere all over the globe. Wave amplitude enhancements have been systematically observed around tropopause levels, which are apparently due to artifacts generated by any digital filter used to isolate the wave components from these data. We present a new filtering method which can be equally applied to temperature or refractivity profiles. It was tested with synthetic temperature data based on NCEP reanalyes and observed wave climatologies and it was also statistically validated with GPS radio occultation profiles from the COSMIC mission. The suggested technique significantly reduces artificial enhancements around the tropopause, mainly at low latitudes, where a sharp lapse rate change usually exists. This represents an improvement in comparison to previous applications of standard filters. In addition it would allow the study of longer vertical wavelengths than previously done with other filtering procedures. © Author(s) 2011.

Descripción: A model is developed to describe the electrostatic boundary layer in a positively biased magnetic filter in filtered arcs with low collisionality. The set of equations used includes the electron momentum equation, with an anomalous collision term due to micro-instabilities leading to Bohm diffusion, electron mass conservation, and Poisson equation. Analytical solutions are obtained, valid for the regimes of interest, leading to an explicit expression to determine the electron density current to the filter wall as a function of the potential of the filter and the ratio of electron density at the plasma to that at the filter wall. Using a set of planar and cylindrical probes it is verified experimentally that the mentioned ratio of electron densities remains reasonably constant for different magnetic field values and probe bias, which allows to obtain a closed expression for the current. Comparisons are made with the experimentally determined current collected at different sections of a positively biased straight filter. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: We discuss the global gravity wave (GW) activity expressed by the specific potential energy in the altitude range from 5 km below to 10 km above the tropopause, derived from GPS radio occultation data from CHAMP (2001-2008). The GW analysis is based on vertical detrending of the individual measured temperature profiles by applying a Gaussian filter in two different ways: (i) filtering of the complete temperature profiles and (ii) separate filtering of the profiles for the tropospheric and lower stratospheric parts. The separate filtering method significantly reduces the usually observed wave activity enhancement in the tropopause region which highly depends on the performance of the complete filtering method to reproduce the change in the temperature gradient at the tropopause. We only consider vertical wavelengths less than 10 km. The global mean potential energy in the tropopause region deduced with these different background temperatures will be analyzed, differences will be emphasized and possible error sources of the new method will be considered. Descripción: Imaging of samples by different microscopy techniques has produced a relevant impact in the development of new diagnosis techniques in biology, medicine and material science. In many biological, applications, where the sample changes or moves during the observation, a moving spot to track an identified sample is required. We introduce here an optical system that can perform, this tracking without mechanical components. The system, is based on the use of a high resolution liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) device working as a mostly phase wave front modulator. The additional advantage of this system is performing the motion of the spot at video rate. In general, these devices produce coupled phase and amplitude modulation responses as a function of the applied voltage. This coupling effect deteriorates the response of those ideal optical elements designed as phase only or amplitude only functions. By means of an elliptical polarization light we can reduce the amplitude modulation and improve the phase modulation. We have experimentally found a configuration where the amplitude is almost constant while the phase reaches a high modulation. For this configuration we show how the spot can be moved through, focus plane by means of linear phases, or displaced out of this plane by using a quadratic phase. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Descripción: This work proposes to employ the number of dry days (days without precipitation) as a variable of study, and to analyse their spatial and temporal variability in Argentina. Climatological aspects of dry days, such as their annual mean values and its seasonal cycle, were discussed and compared with precipitation features in the country. Linear trends in the annual number of dry days (ANDD) were identified for the period 1960-2005. Most of the regions exhibited decreasing trends, but few stations showed significant ones. The most important trends were present in the Central-West region and over the Patagonian coast and their magnitudes indicated a decrease of two to six dry days per decade. These trends coincide with the observed increase of accumulated precipitation in part of the country during the second half of the 20th century. To identify long-term fluctuations in the ANDD, a low pass filter, a wavelet analysis and a cubic polynomial fit was applied to the longest time series of the selected locations. Through these methodologies, periodicities were identified in the inter-annual and inter-decadal ranges for the last 80 years. The most important significant cycles were observed in the range of 10-24 years, but also, depending on the region, significant inter-annual variations were found. © 2012 Royal Meteorological Society.
