Descripción: According to the global predictions by the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), the sea-level rise due to ocean thermal expansion and glacier mass loss will average 0.09 - 0.88 m between 1990 and 2100, with a trend toward an increasing rise rate. Potential impacts of this increasing rise rate relate to changes in the coastal area, including floods, increased coastal retreat, and saline intrusion in the coastal acquiferous and estuaries. In order to achieve an appropriate coastal management scheme in the Province of Río Negro, the area was divided into zones to show information of the level of hazard on a simple map. To identify areas of geological hazard related to permanent and/ or episodic floods, a database was prepared. The threatened or in-danger areas were identified by means of coastal vulnerability indices, also called susceptibility indices, which were calculated by means of an algorithm that relates different variables obtained from coastal geology, and oceanographic and climatological information. This index is defined by seven variables and can be used to identify areas in risk of erosion or permanent/temporary flood. The most vulnerable areas to sea level rise are Balneario El Salado (Playas Doradas), San Antonio Oeste - San Antonio Este, Caleta de los Loros, and the Río Negro mouth. Descripción: The objective of this research is to study the main variability modes of the frequency of extreme temperatures in the south of South Amenica, their relation to sea surface temperatures (SSTs), and some indices of atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere. Observational data and reanalysis data were used for this purpose over the 1964-2003 period. An initial analysis showed that between the months of March and June, the frequency of wann events (especially warm nights) is highly associated with the SST in coastal zones. A wavelet analysis showed that the main variability mode found at a seasonal scale was an 8-year wave signal present in spning that remains active until the 1990s; it was noticeable in the analysis of cold nights, Atlantic SSTs, Pacific SSTs, and the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). A cross-wavelet analysis among them reflected this signal as a common variability mode, with the positive phase of the SAM congruent with the warmest conditions in the coastal zones of the Atlantic Ocean and lower cases with cold nights at the reference meteorological stations analyzed. Although longer series are desirable for low-frequency variability analysis, the results agree with previous studies that take into account an 8-year periodicity of the baroclinic waves at the Southern Hemisphere, supporting the relevance of the 8-year signal. Descripción: The coast of Lobería and Necochea is characterized by cliffsand narrow beaches. The inlet of the Quequén Grande river used to alter the coastline. The construction of jetties related to the Quequén Harbour induced huge accumulations of sand towards Necochea, and a critic erosive process of cliff and beach to the east. Beach width reduces from 300 m at the west to 40-60 m to the east. Considering regional sand scarcity, the eastern beaches are characterized by more sand variability. Greater variations in the sand balance were assigned to human activity. Waves coming from the E, SE and S deliver more energy along this eastern sector. On the other hand, submerged zones of these beaches have less availability of sand. Greater availability of fine sand was recognized towards Necochea. The Quequén Grande river has much effect on the estuarine dynamics during ENSO-triggered floods, although sedimentation is dominated by silt supply.

Descripción: The 15 species in the weevil genus Galapaganus Lanteri 1992 (Entiminae: Curculionidae: Coleoptera) are distributed on coastal Peril and Ecuador and include 10 flightless species endemic to the Galapagos islands. These beetles thus provide a promising system through which to investigate the patterns and processes of evolution on Darwin's archipelago. Sequences of the mtDNA locus encoding cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) were obtained from samples of seven species occurring in different ecological zones of the oldest south-eastern islands: San Cristobal, Espanola and Floreana, and the central island Santa Cruz. The single most parsimonious tree obtained shows two well-supported clades that correspond to the species groups previously defined by morphological characters. Based on a mtDNA clock calibrated for arthropods, the initial speciation separating the oldest species, G. galapagoensis (Linell) on the oldest island, San Cristobal, from the remaining species in the Galapagos occurred about 7.2 Ma. This estimate exceeds geological ages of the extant emerged islands, although it agrees well with molecular dating of endemic Galapagos iguanas, geckos and lizards. An apparent explanation for the disagreement between geological and molecular time-frames is that about 7 Ma there were emerged islands which subsequently disappeared under ocean waters. This hypothesis has gained support from the recent findings of 11 -Myr-old submarine seamounts (sunken islands), south-east of the present location of the archipelago. Some species within the darwini group may have differentiated on the extant islands, 1-5 Ma.
