Descripción: Recent observations of coronal loops in solar active regions show that their heating must be a truly dynamic process. Even though it seems clear that the energy source is the magnetic field that confines the coronal plasma, the details of how it dissipates are still a matter of debate. In this presentation we review the theoretical models of coronal heating, which have been traditionally clasified as DC or AC depending on the electrodynamic response of the loops to the photospheric driving motions. Also, we show results from numerical simulations of the internal dynamics of coronal loops within the framework of the reduced MHD approximation. These simulations indicate that the application of a stationary velocity field at the photospheric boundary leads to a turbulent stationary regime after several photospheric turnover times. Once this turbulent regime is set, both DC and AC stresses dissipate at faster rates as a result of a direct energy cascade. © International Astronomical Union 2011.

Descripción: Turbulent flows take place in a large variety of astrophysical objects, and often times are the source of dynamo generated magnetic fields. Much of the progress in our understanding of dynamo mechanisms, has been made within the theoretical framework of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). However, for sufficiently diffuse media, the Hall effect eventually becomes non-negligible. We present results from simulations of the Hall-MHD equations. The simulations are performed with a pseudospectral code to achieve exponentially fast convergence. We study the role of the Hall effect in the dynamo efficiency for different values of the Hall parameter. © 2011 International Astronomical Union.

Descripción: El Infiernillo Mining District is located in the San Rafael Block (34°38'20";68°47'37"), province of Mendoza, Argentina. It is a porphyry Cu (Mo) type deposit which is hosted by a volcaniclastic sequence. It develops an alteration halo with a concentric pattern consisting of a central quartz neck surrounded by a potassic alteration zone and outwards a phyllic halo and small polymetallic veins. The potassic halo has a paragenesis of K-feldspar-quartz-(biotite). Three silicification phases are related to this alteration stage, one of them (with temperature between 550° and 390°C and salinity between 35 and 47 %) genetically linked to the copper mineralization. The phyllic alteration consists of quartz-illite-(rutile) with minor albite. The albitization process points out to an early phase of this phyllic stage. The fluid inclusions together with the textures of the quartz neck suggest the shallowing of the active hydrothermal system. The disseminated ore paragenesis consists of bornite, chalcopyrite-molibdenite, pyrite, (galena-sphalerite). The presence of molibdenite-quartz veins indicate the transition from the potassic to the phyllic stage while the pyrite-quartz ones point out to a transition to a fragile deformation regime during which the polymetallic veins, with a paragenesis of chalcopyrite- sphalerite, pyrite, (Ag) tetrahedrite, galena were formed. The petrologic characteristics of the volcaniclastic host rocks reveal that they correspond to the lower section of Choiyoi magmatic cycle. The magmatic and structural controls constrain the age of this ore deposit to the Early-Middle to Late Permian.

Descripción: We present a new technique suitable for a detailed comparison between solar dynamo models and observations. The method is based on the technique of dynamo spectroscopy proposed by Hoyng & Schutgens (1995) and bi-orthogonal decomposition of solar data. This decomposition provides a representation of the mean and fluctuating components of the flows, yielding relevant information for the comparison. To illustrate the method, we use a simple kinematic dynamo model of the solar cycle. Irregularities are introduced in the evolution of the magnetic fields modeling the turbulent behavior of the solar convective region with a random perturbation on the external source for the poloidal field. After fine tuning the parameters of the model we obtain solar like solutions displaying a magnetic cycle of 22 years, with fluctuations in its period and amplitude. In addition, the model generates Maunder-like events with a time span of 60-100 years.

Descripción: Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence has been proposed as a mechanism for the heating of coronal active regions, and has therefore been actively investigated in recent years. According to this scenario, a turbulent regime is driven by footpoint motions. The energy being pumped this way into active region loops, is efficiently transferred to small scales due to a direct energy cascade. The ensuing generation of fine scale structures, which is a natural outcome of turbulent regimes, helps to enhance the dissipation of either waves or DC currents. We present an updated overview of recent results on turbulent coronal heating. To illustrate this theoretical scenario, we simulate the internal dynamics of a coronal loop within the reduced MHD approximation. The application of a stationary velocity field at the photospheric boundary leads to a turbulent stationary regime after several photospheric turnover times. This regime is characterized by a broadband power spectrum and energy dissipation rate levels compatible with the heating requirements of active region loops. Also, the energy dissipation rate displays a complex superposition of impulsive events, which we associate to the so-called nanoflares. A statistical analysis yields a power law distribution as a function of their energies, which is consistent with those obtained from observations. We also study the distributions of peak dissipation rate and duration of these events. © 2008 International Astronomical Union.

Descripción: Nucleotide variation was studied in a 1.1 kb section of the coding region of an Esterase gene (Est-A) that maps in the center of the segments rearranged by polymorphic inversions in the cactophilic Drosophila buzzatii. We examine 30 homozygous second-chromosome lines differing in gene arrangement and three D. koepferae isofemale lines as outgroups. Our data show that Est-A is a highly polymorphic gene at both synonymous and replacement sites. Significant departures from homogeneity in the distribution of the ratio of silent polymorphism to divergence predicted by the neutral theory reveals a local excess of silent polymorphism. This is consistent with the presence of two apparent narrow peaks of elevated silent polymorphism surrounding nonconservative amino acid substitutions. These polymorphisms as well as others at synonymous and nonsynonymous sites are shared with D. koepferae. We suggest that the presence of shared nucleotide polymorphisms is probably due to interspecific gene flow and/or balancing selection acting on replacement variants and/or to a decreased probability of loss of ancestral polymorphisms caused by linkage to an adaptive inversion polymorphism. Recurrent mutation and persistence of neutral ancestral polymorphisms cannot, however, be ruled out. The analysis of the distribution of nucleotide variation among the three chromosomal arrangements sampled reveals that derived arrangements (J and JZ3) are less polymorphic than the ancestral ST, and that the widely distributed ST and J arrangements are genetically differentiated. However, a significant number of polymorphisms are shared between arrangements, suggesting frequent exchange either from gene conversion or from double crossovers in heterokaryotypes. Finally, our present results in combination with data of sequence variation at the breakpoints of inversion J suggest that this old gene arrangement has risen in frequency in relatively recent times.

Descripción: The large-scale dynamics of plasmas is well described within the framework of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). However, whenever the ion density of the plasma becomes sufficiently low, the Hall effect is likely to become important. The role of the Hall effect has been studied in several astrophysical plasma processes, such as magnetic reconnection, magnetic dynamo, MHD turbulence, or MHD instabilities. In particular, the development of small-scale instabilities is essential to understand the transport properties in a number of astrophysical plasmas. The magneto-rotational instability (MRI), which takes place in differentially rotating accretion disks embedded in relatively weak magnetic fields, is just one example. The influence of the large-scale velocity flows on small-scale instabilities is often approximated by a linear shear flow. In this paper, we quantitatively study the role of the Hall effect on plasmas embedded in large-scale shear flows. More precisely, we show that an instability develops when the Hall effect is present, which we therefore term as the Hall magneto-shear instability. As a particular case, we recover the so-called MRI and quantitatively assess the role of the Hall effect on its development and evolution. © 2011 The American Astronomical Society. Descripción: The Arroyo La Chilca-Zanjón del Buitre alteration zone, San Rafael Massif, Mendoza. The Arroyo La Chilca-Zanjón del Buitre alteration zone is located in the San Rafael Massif (35°24'8" S; 68°19'25,8" W), Mendoza. Previous works defined preliminary this deposit as a porphyry copper system genetically linked to the gondwanan magmatism. This alteration zone is hosted by a sequence composed of ignimbritic breccias and ignimbrites of trachyandesitic composition with interbedded tuffaceous sandstones and andesitic lavas flows intruded by trachyandesitic-dacitic and andesitic hypabyssal bodies. The lithology and geochemistry of the volcanic sequence confirm the link with the Choiyoi Magmatic Cycle lower section (Lower Permian). The alteration zone consists of a potassic halo with a parageneses of K-feldspar-quartzmagnetite overprinted by phyllic alteration with an assemblage of quartz-muscovite-pyrite-(rutile) and quartz -pyrite veins. A late carbonatization process overprints both the potassic and phyllic alteration. Outside the alteration zone pyrite-chalcopyrite- galena-sphalerite veins with quartz gangue crop out. Metals geochemistry shows moderate Ag and Au anomalies and little Cu, Mo, Pb and Zn anomalies. Statistical analyses allow defining one Cu-Mo mineralizing stage and another Mo mineralizing stage only recognized in Zanjón del Buitre. Moreover, two Zn mineralizing stages, one of them probably genetically related to the Cu stage, were also recognized.

Descripción: We study the coupling between the hot plasma confined in a coronal loop and the much colder chromospheric plasma at the footpoints. Considering the coronal heating rate as a control parameter, we find that the static equilibrium becomes unstable for heating rates below a critical value, giving rise to the appearance of a stable limit cycle. Starting from the hydrodynamic equations, we derive a model which generalizes the analysis of Kuin and Martens and consistently takes into account the condensation-evaporation process. In this paper, we linearize our equations in order to find the bifurcation point where the stability of the static equilibrium is lost. We also show that this model can provide a natural explanation for the excess widths of EUV spectral lines formed in the transition region. Moreover, we can predict the observed reduction in the broadening of these lines when they form in certain active regions, like quiescent prominences or sunspots.

Descripción: Herein we describe a new rhynchocephalian taxon from the Middle Jurassic of Patagonia, Argentina, representing the first Jurassic record of the group in South America. The new taxon, consisting of a complete dentary, is ascribed to Sphenodontia based on the presence of a deep and wide Meckelian groove, long posterior process, well-developed coronoid process, and acrodont teeth showing dental regionalization including successional, alternate hatchling, and additional series. This allocation is reinforced by a phylogenetic analysis that places the new taxon in a basal position within a clade of sphenodontians that excludes Diphydontosaurus and Planocephalosaurus. Additionally, the new taxon clusters within a Gondwanan clade with the Indian Godavarisaurus from the Jurassic Kota Formation, sharing the presence of recurved and relatively large posterior successional teeth that are ribbed and bear a peculiar anterolingual groove. This sister-group relationship is intriguing from a palaeobiogeographical viewpoint, as it suggests some degree of endemism during the initial stages of the breakup of Pangaea. We also discuss the ontogenetic stage of the new taxon and provide insights on the evolution of successional dentition in rhynchocephalians. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London.

Descripción: Although there have been many ecological field studies on the key components of planktonic food webs, there are still gaps in knowledge on some groups, environments and seasons. This is the first report on the spatial distribution of the density and biomass of almost all the taxonomic groups and size fractions of protozooplankton across a cold-temperate shelf during winter. Twenty-eight stations (two or three depths) were sampled on four cross-shelf transects in Patagonian waters (south-western Atlantic; 47-55°S, 60-69°W) during September 2006. Loricate ciliates, radiolarians and foraminiferans showed the lowest densities, and were distributed mainly in coastal, slope or the whole shelf waters, respectively. The density and biomass of aloricate ciliates and heterotrophic nanoflagellates and dinoflagellates were low and homogeneous both vertically and across the shelf south of 51°S, but peaked in the upper 40 m in offshore waters at 47°S. Microplanktonic aloricate ciliates, which represented 53% of the total protozooplankton biomass, reached values as high as 16 μg CL-1 on the last transect. Consequently, both protozooplankton biomass and its ratio to chlorophyll a concentration were significantly higher in the northern offshore waters. These trends were linked to higher subsurface temperature and chlorophyll a concentration, and lower copepod nauplii biomass. Our results probably reflect changes in both the availability of food resources and predators and the physical structure of the water column, which are a consequence of the different environmental conditions that coexist over the large latitudinal and longitudinal gradients covered during late winter. © The Author 2010.

Descripción: In a previous paper, we have modeled the coupling between corona and chromosphere and derived a non-linear set of equations, where the global stability properties of the coronal plasma can be studied. The linear stability analysis indicates that the static equilibrium is stable unless the heating rate falls below a certain critical value. In the present paper, we study the nonlinear evolution of our equations both analytically and numerically. Applying a perturbative technique around the critical point, we find that a subcritical Hopf bifurcation takes place. The numerical integration of the equations agrees satisfactorily with the analytical results when they are compared close to the bifurcation. The nonthermal Doppler widths of EUV lines forming in the transition region can be explained by the existence of relatively low amplitude limit cycles.
