Contenido: The sixth interpolated tale in the first part of Don Quijote begins with a song by Don Luis, who disguised as a muleteer, follows his beloved. In the song, Don Luis portrays himself as a mariner of love and as a new Palinurus. This is a reference to the pilot in Virgil’s Aeneid. After delineating the importance of this classical figure in the Spanish Golden Age, this essay analyzes the tragic shadow that Palinurus projects into this tale. The fatidic contemplation of his star may well lead Luis to a disastrous end. Since Palinurus, in the Aeneid dies as a sacrifice to Neptune, one must consider that the future voyage of Clara and her father to America could be a dangerous one. The same can be said of Luis’ travels to Andalucía, since he is accompanied by Don Fernando, known for his treachery.

Contenido: One of the culminating moments in the penetration of Spanish philological model into Latin America was the creation of the Instituto de Filología de Buenos Aires, whose institutional and academic influence extended far beyond the Argentine borders. It is commonly accpeted that this foundation “resulted from the conflictive integration of two different projects: the reformist nationalism of Ricardo Rojas and the scientific modernization program developed in Spain by the JAE (and disseminated in Argentina by the Institución Cultural Española)” (Toscano y García 2009). What, with this paper, we would like to add to this, is that the above said “program of scientific modernization developed in Spain” was not homogeneous but, on the contrary, faced two antagonistic philological models: that of Menéndez Pidal, influenced by the ideology of the “Generación del 98”; and that of his disciples, alien to those guidelines. The understanding of this distance is, in our opinion, fundamental to properly asses a certain development of philology in Latin America. 

Contenido: The paper begins with a concern for a series of critical discourses that, from 1983 to the present, tried to organize the Argentinean literary production into narrative plots with historical plausibility that inquire into the complex relationship between cultural production, society and historical change in the process of constitution of the literary value. The analysis focuses the modes of literary periodization of a literary history project, Historia crítica de la literatura argentina, and proposes the following questions: ¿what are the critical actions that this literary history uses to displace traditional perio-dization methods? And ¿in what way it reflects on the categories considered obsolete and how tests new time measurement frameworks for the historiographical narrative?

Contenido: From La Galatea to the Persiles, Cervantes’s narrative is a rich metaliterary laboratory inhabited by different types of readers. The reader of poetry who expects his life to follow the rules of the poetic topics is one of them. It is a reader invariably doomed to failure due to the abyss that opens between his life and the poetic topics. The purpose of this article is to study this type of readers of poetry in the crossroads between the expectations of the literary genres that rule their stories and those of their poetic referents. The following characters will be analysed: Teolinda and Rosaura in La Galatea, Grisóstomo in Don Quixote, Ricardo in El amante liberal and the enamoured portuguese in the Persiles.

Contenido: Un género de breve productividad de la industria cinematográfica argentina fue el policial semidocumental realizado durante los años del primer gobierno peronista. En él, se narraban historias que ensalzaban el accionar de la policía apelando a casos verídicos, la filmación en locaciones reales y el uso de la voz over. En este artículo nos proponemos examinar las formas en las que este subgénero se desarrolló en la Argentina y analizar el sistema de personajes masculinos, el cual puede dividirse en dos conjuntos: delincuentes y oficiales de la ley.

Contenido: For several decades, Brazilian national critics have contributed to the stigmatization of film genres by identifying them with cultural imperialism and differentiating their filmmakers between authors and artisans. This had an impact on the development of a historiography that privileged auteur cinema. However, police and criminal films, terror and its monsters constitute a privileged discursive space when it comes to thinking about the fears, anxieties and forms of violence of a society in relation to the binary cultural matrices of images and discourses of the masculine and the feminine. In this sense, the present work deals with Carlos Hugo Christensen’s filmography in Brazil, an unavoidable reference of the origins of the detective and criminal genres in Argentina, to investigate the political potential of these objects of mass culture from a gender perspective. I will seek to analyze the relationships between the destabilization of order and law as a male institution that are posed in the police, detective and crime genres, with those of heteronormativity through the staging of subjectivities that challenge or question the power relations of masculinities.

Contenido: Ana María Barrenechea (1913-2010) fue una mujer notable como investigadora, como profesora, como amiga, como formadora, como pionera. Sus intereses tuvieron lugar en diferentes ámbitos: Teoría literaria, Lingüística, Gramática y literaturas española y latinoamericana. También fueron diversos los lugares en los que ejerció sus tareas: en la Argentina, en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, en el Instituto del Profesorado, en el CONICET y en varias universidades del interior del país (La Plata, Mendoza, Bahía Blanca). Fuera del país, especialmente en Estados Unidos (Harvard, Ohio, Columbia) y también en Perú, México y Puerto Rico. A esto debemos añadir sus labores como conferencista, jurado, presidenta de asociaciones (fue la primera presidente mujer de la AIH), todas tareas que la llevaron a diversos lugares del mundo en los que anudó relaciones y cultivó amistades ejerciendo esa impronta estimulante que fue una de sus mayores características junto con la generosidad de sus actitudes, su total falta de soberbia o engreimiento y la solidaridad con que permeaba sus actos.Hoy la revista Filología del Instituto de Filología y Literaturas Hispánicas “Dr. Amado Alonso”, del que fue directora en dos épocas (1958-966 y 1984-2003), desea rendirle su homenaje recordando el centenario de su nacimiento en 2013.Los trabajos aquí reunidos tratan de cubrir todas las facetas de su saber, de ahí su heterogeneidad. Presentamos, a través de amigos, discípulos y colegas, artículos y semblanzas de diferente especie, escritos desde el respeto, la nostalgia, el amor y el agradecimiento.La necrológica que abre el número pertenece a Isaías Lerner, fallecido en enero de 2013, que fue publicada en el diario español El País. Isaías fue su discípulo, su secretario cuando dirigió el Instituto hasta las renuncias de 1966 y fue también, o sobre todo, su amigo, el que impulsó el homenaje de 1984, el que estuvo pendiente de ella desde la distancia. No podía faltar su presencia en esta publicación.Pese a nuestro empeño no figuran todos los que, por una causa o por otra, tenían derecho a estar y que, también por diversas causas, no están.Tal como se dijo, hemos tratado de cubrir todos los aspectos del saber que fueron del interés de Ana María Barrenechea. Así, la figura Marta Gallo (de la Universidad de California, Santa Bárbara) representa a los que acompañamos a Anita en la última cátedra de Introducción a la Literatura que se truncó en 1966. De la misma manera que Isaías Lerner o Lía Schwartz (ambos de The City University of New York) o de la que esto escribe, el tiempo llevó a Marta a devenir de discípula en amiga. Otros son colegas entrañables, compañeros de políticas universitarias afines, amigos de siempre como Tulio Halperin Donghi (California, Berkeley); representantes de los diversos proyectos de tesis que dirigió (Ana María Camblong y Salvio Martín Menéndez); discípulos dilectos como Jorge Panesi, Jorge Monteleone y Daniel Link; miembros de los equipos de investigación que dirigió desde “Las normas cultas en el uso de la lengua española en América” (Laura María Rizzi) hasta el “Epistolario Sarmiento-Frías” o “Archivos de la memoria” (Lucila Pagliai, Josefina Delgado, Raúl Illescas, Valeria Añón, Paola Cortés Rocca) .Cada uno de ellos ha logrado encontrar el tono (siempre diferente) para rendir homenaje a Anita: haciendo hincapié en lo biográfico (Halperin); recordando su trayectoria desde su interés por la memoria (Panesi); recuperando, desde diversas perspectivas, su trabajo ya clásico sobre la obra de Jorge Luis Borges (Menéndez y Link); revisitando Rayuela, un texto entrañablemente unido a Barrenechea (Gallo); o rescatando su interés por la formación docente (Rizzi). El resto de los trabajos (Añón, Camblong, Cortés-Rocca, Delgado, Illescas, Monteleone, Pagliai y Schwartz) se relacionan con los estudios literarios y teóricos desplegados por la homenajeada a lo largo de su extensa trayectoria.Como se ve, heterogeneidad –de temas, de enfoques, incluso generacional– que, creemos, se corresponde a la riqueza, a la curiosidad siempre viva, a la inteligencia brillante de Ana María Barrenechea.

Contenido: A propósito de los cincuenta años de la primera edición de Rayuela, en este artículose propone una vuelta al texto cortazariano para destacar, contra las lecturas queinsisten en su envejecimiento y en lo perimido de su propuesta literaria, las novedadesy los desafíos que aún en el presente el texto representa para su posible lector.En especial, esos desafíos que propone Rayuela se inscriben en el uso que Cortázarhizo del lenguaje, y cómo ese uso heterodoxo, o desafiante, pone en crisis categoríascomo sentido o realidad y, sobre todo, la concepción del género novela.AbstractOn occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the first edition of Rayuela, this articleseeks to return to Cortazarian text in order to highlight -against readings that insiston his literary proposal is aged and outdated- developments and challenges the textrepresents still at present for its potential reader. In particular, these challengesproposed by Rayuela are related to the use of language, and how that unorthodox orchallenging use brings into question categories such as sense or reality and, above all,the conception of the novel genre.

Contenido: The purpose of this article is twofold. First, it seeks to present some of the current debates about the situation of renaissance humanism studies in dialogue with the theories of Ernesto Grassi as they appear in his Rhetoric as Philosophy. The Humanist Tradition (1980), and with two recent publications: Cristopher Celenza’s The Lost Italian Renaissance. Humanists, Historians, and Latin’s Legacy (2004) and Rocco Rubini’s The Other Renaissance: Italian Humanism between Hegel and Heidegger (2014). Secondly, it tries to show that some aspects of the media theory of Marshall McLuhan (a Renaissance scholar himself) can be repurposed to illuminate how Renaissance humanists conceived the effect of classical latin on culture. This is exemplified by an analysis of some of Lorenzo Valla’s statements about this problem. Overall, we seek to show that some of the cross-roads pointed out by Celenza and Rubini regarding the current situation of Renaissance studies can be addressed taking into account the contributions of media theory. 

Contenido: Este ensayo explora la representación del asesino en serie en la trilogía Morirás mañana de Jaime Bayly. Considerada la expresión más violenta de la masculinidad, el asesino en serie se ha convertido en un ícono cultural debido a la gran atención tanto en los medios como en la literatura. Este trabajo propone que Morirás mañana evita imitar el modelo originario del subgénero de asesino en serie mediante la subversión de las convenciones del modelo, tales como la presencia de representantes de la ley y el restablecimiento del statu quo. La transgresión se manifiesta también en la elección de una estructura narrativa y de un punto de vista diferentes, al igual que en la inserción de este personaje en un contexto de anomia donde la falta de fe en el orden social y en la justicia es la norma. Este trabajo también estudia la singular representación del asesino en serie, Javier Garcés, personaje que dista de la imagen tradicional puesto que su violencia no va dirigida exclusivamente a las mujeres ni es de naturaleza sexual. Este trabajo concluye que, debido a la transgresión del subgénero y a la representación no genérica del homicida, la obra de Bayly desmitifica la figura del asesino serial.

Contenido: This article proposes to reflect on the different ways of approaching the undeniable current relevance of María Rosa Lida's position, especially based on a series of debates and concepts that would define her special critical strategies. Among those strategies, the article insists on one of the traits (together with her gift for controversy, already discussed in a previous article [Catelli, 2011]) that is considered typical of Lida, both from a personal point of view and from the angle of her special situation, as an American, within European and especially Spanish philology. This trait is the recourse to various modalities of dialogue, with Américo Castro among others, marked by an indefatigable desire for correction, both in detail and in a wider historical range.

Contenido: In this paper we address the discourse on the death, contact and change of languages in two texts that we have read and compared: the book Archipiélago [Archipielago] by Ricardo Rojas (1942) and the article “Cómo muere una lengua” [How does a language die?] by Benvenuto Terracini (1951). In our analysis, we emphasize the tensions and conflicts arising in both texts as part of a field in construction: the field of the lin-guistic and philological studies. We also inquire into discursive constructions about language and otherness developed by both texts and the “glotopolitics” implications associated with those positions.

Contenido: When in the Poema de Alfonso Onceno the king decides to intervene to control the tutors, his ayo advises him on how to be a good governor. Regarding the relationship with his vassals, the ayo advises the king to exercise justice without being carried away by “spite.” An exemplary type of action is proposed there: temperance with their own people. However, some of the king’s actions against nobility seem to contradict this model. Therefore, the hypothesis of this article is that advices are used to present the most controversial cases of internal policy in the form of problems related to the exercise of government. In this way, the poem highlights the motivations and justifications that guide the king’s decisions taken in front of each particular problem. Through this mechanism, virtuous qualities linked to decision-making and the fulfilment of royal duties are attributed to the king, which allow him to adapt his figure to the model proposed by the ayo. Then, in this way of constructing the royal image it is possible to read the model of the pacifier and righteous king that the poem presents.
