The paper presents, from a theoretical approach, the development of an economic model of environmental insurance with risk transfer and some extensions considering information asymmetries. From an empirical point of view, it examines the current regulatory framework in Argentina and described the environmental insurance market. Finally, we compare features that emerge from the theoretical model with respect to those observed empirically. The results suggest that there is similarity in some concepts such as incentives to protect natural resources or signaling the agent type, while in others there are substantial differences, such as risk transfer and determination of the insured amount. Keywords: Environmental insurance, information asymmetries, regulation, incentives. - El trabajo presenta, desde un abordaje teórico, el desarrollo de un modelo económico de seguro ambiental con transferencia de riesgos y algunas extensiones, considerando asimetrías de información. Desde el punto de vista empírico, se analiza el marco regulatorio vigente en Argentina y se describe el mercado de seguros ambientales. Finalmente, se comparan las características que emergen del modelo teórico respecto de aquellas observadas empíricamente. Los resultados sugieren que existe similitud en algunas nociones, como el incentivo al agente o la señalización, mientras que en otras se presentan diferencias sustanciales, como la transferencia de riesgo y la determinación del monto asegurable.
