Krapp's Last Tape

In this article we investigate how in Samuel Beckett’s play Krapp’s Last Tape (1958) language –as a structuring agent of memory– and thus the possibility of remembering through it, begins to become a ruin. In other words, how speech is not enough to reconstruct that which no longer exists in memory; it no longer serves, if it ever did. I will start my review from Eleutheria (1947), the first play by Samuel Beckett in which Victor Krap appears, who later in Krapp’s Last Tape will be the same and the other at the same time. Thus we will see how in the transition from one piece to the other, Krapp’s identity enters into crisis as a result of the progressive degradation of memory and the loss of meaning of words.

En el presente artículo realizamos una indagación en torno a cómo en la obra de teatro de Samuel Beckett, Krapp’s Last Tape (1958) el lenguaje –en tanto estructurante de la memoria– y, por ende, la posibilidad de recordar a través de él, comienza a volverse ruina. En otras palabras, cómo el habla no alcanza para reconstruir aquello que ya no existe en la memoria; ya no sirve, si es que sirvió alguna vez. Empezaré el recorrido a partir de Eleutheria (1947), la primera obra de Samuel Beckett en la cual aparece Victor Krap, quien luego en Krapp’s Last Tape será el mismo y otro a la vez. Así veremos cómo en el tránsito que va de una pieza a la otra, la identidad de Krapp entra en crisis a partir de la progresiva degradación de la memoria y la pérdida de sentido de las palabras.
